The number of seniors visiting emergency rooms in California for cannabis-related issues is growing, according to new research.
From 2005 to 2019, the state’s emergency departments saw a 1,808 percent relative increase in the rate of cannabis-related trips among those aged 65 and older.
Cannabis is currently legal for both medicinal and recreational use in California. The state became the first in the country to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, while the substance was not approved for recreational use there until November 2016.
The study found that cannabis-related emergency department visits in California rose sharply among seniors from 2013 to 2017, but leveled off after 2017 following implementation of the state’s legalization program. Based on those findings, researchers noted legalization of recreational marijuana does not appear to correlate with higher emergency department visits among elderly adults.
But the results do underscore the health risks cannabis can pose to seniors.

In the ‘70s too, Columbian Gold, Thai sticks & sin semilla were everywhere at my S. Florida high school.
its the 300 plus MG of thc in the gummie that will get you.
no thanks if someone gave me one i would take a knife and cut it in to small pieces
I wonder how many of those people had a bac of .08 or higher, and also tested positive for cobia
Pee in a cup is like covid testing.
I have been to festivals/concerts and other places where people have tried to give me cookies, brownies, candies etc. I always say no thank you cause I have no idea of the dosage. I have seen people eat stuff and 30 min later they are totally not buzzed, so they eat 2 more and the become blathering zombies for hours.
If I took a puff on a joint, but did not inhale, pretty sure I know what that won’t do to me.
Yeah, I’m with you. Never partook myself.
1) The symptom is uncontrollable vomiting sometimes for many hours or days. The press does not want to mention this.
2) One becomes dehydrated and weak; not good for seniors. Hence the ER visits. Again, the press does not want to mention this either.
3) The number of ER visits due to CHS has stayed high (leveled off according to the article) since 2017.
4) The issue repeats itself often when the patient uses THC is some form again.
5) And the press is trying to spin this as a good thing? Gross
That’s why it’s not and can never be ‘medicinal’. It’s a poison and everyone has completely different reactions to the same or different doses nearly every time.
It’s a nightmare that’s screwed the country.
That’s the problem with edibles. You expect to be high the same as when smoked. It takes an hour or two and folks don’t feel anything and take another. Even long time smokers I know are careful with edibles.
There's nothing the hospital can do about someone getting too high other than let it wear off. There's no antidote for THC intoxication.
Even if you do OD, you're not going to die, unless it's due to choking while scarfing down your munchies.
“ If you’re a senior and you don’t want to smoke it, just get a vape pen. ”
I’m a senior and that’s what I do. I replaced my Vicodin with a vape.
Now we know where the “Buzz” in your handle comes from!
That’s why we call it dope.
