The number of seniors visiting emergency rooms in California for cannabis-related issues is growing, according to new research.
From 2005 to 2019, the state’s emergency departments saw a 1,808 percent relative increase in the rate of cannabis-related trips among those aged 65 and older.
Cannabis is currently legal for both medicinal and recreational use in California. The state became the first in the country to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, while the substance was not approved for recreational use there until November 2016.
The study found that cannabis-related emergency department visits in California rose sharply among seniors from 2013 to 2017, but leveled off after 2017 following implementation of the state’s legalization program. Based on those findings, researchers noted legalization of recreational marijuana does not appear to correlate with higher emergency department visits among elderly adults.
But the results do underscore the health risks cannabis can pose to seniors.

If you’re a senior and you don’t want to smoke it, just get a vape pen. Then you can control the dosage and not end up freaking out and wasting everyone’s time at the hospital.

CBD doesn’t have any effect on anyone. Not a psychoactive effect at least; some people say it still relaxes them or helps with some other issues.
But mainly it’s a ripoff to get people who don’t know the difference between CBD and THC to waste their money on something that is only legal most places because it can’t get you high.
It depletes vitamin C.
CBD doesnt get you high (and marijuana is not a pain reliever).
CBD is not the same as THC. You won’t feel much of anything from CBD except in larger doses you may get drowsy.
Me too just a gummy that my friend gave me. I used to smoke pot as a kid but kicked the habit decades ago. The gummy send me on a little psychedelic trip. My 65 y/o self no likey it.
These days with fentanyl out there doing illegal purchases from non-regulated sources is downright way too risky for those who go that route.

I knew a guy who smoked pot in the 70’s and early 80’s before becoming a respectable adult, and stopping it. Then, a few years ago he had the opportunity to smoke a joint of the latest stuff, and he said he had to take the day off from work, as he was just OUT.
I assume that’s probably what’s happening here. “I used to smoke half a lid back in the days with the boys”. (Smokes a joint, and freaks out at the strength of modern stuff).
The actual numbers
In 2005, 366 people over the age of 65 sought care at an emergency department in the state for a cannabis-related issue, while that number grew to 12,167 in 2019.
Very surprising. I wonder what the average ER fee was. I am guessing 4-6k. Probably the ins companies are upset and funded this study.
There were A LOT more folks over 65 in 2109 than there were in 2005.
You need to adjust for population when stating numbers like that.
I see regularly see elderly degenerates going in droves back and forth from a nearby church to smoke and deal with the mustyazz dealer sitting in his lawn chair across the street. Ambulance goes to that church about once a week too.
These filthy old fools submerge the whole block in weed fumes. They probably do the same in their assisted living complexes too, ruining retirement for many of their neighbors.
