Philosophers seeking to answer questions around inequality in household labour and the invisibility of women's work in the home have proposed a new theory -- that men and women are trained by society to see different possibilities for action in the same domestic environment.
They say a view called "affordance theory" -- that we experience objects and situations as having actions implicitly attached -- underwrites the age-old gender disparity when it comes to the myriad mundane tasks of daily home maintenance.
For example, women may look at a surface and see an implied action -- 'to be wiped' -- whereas men may just observe a crumb-covered countertop.
The philosophers believe these deep-seated gender divides in domestic perception can be altered through societal interventions such as extended paternal leave, which will encourage men to build up mental associations for household tasks.

Are you in the desert?
What part of the country?
That is some rough riding :-)
But.....did you use a flip flop? :-)
I was riding the E train once( the E train is a local train that goes up the east side of Manhattan). Someone came passing through one car and into the one I was in and a large roach fluttered in. Good God every woman and a few men went nuts. The thing landed on the floor of the car a few feet from me. I stood up and bought my Timberland construction boot down on it hard, twice to make sure it was dead.
Or in long-term (lifelong) rebellion against being raised by an OCD neat-freak.
Thanks. I’ll re-read it after all that Christmas dinner that was afforded ingestion passes through my stomach. Or something like that.
The NYC roaches are like NYC itself, greasy looking and ugly.
Omg that is my wrap job everytime!! Can’t wrap to save my soul
I’ll never forget what my older, wiser boss said to me. We had women employees who were expected to work hard physically. I expressed my discomfort with that, and he said, “Does your mom work hard?”
Nothing about women needing to learn anything.
Like how men don’t want to go to bed before the house is clean? Coffee pre loaded, dishes all cleaned and ready to be used for another meal? Vacuuming, mopping and washing the toilet, sink and shower? I don’t know why women don’t do those things. I do, and I am a born male who is still a man.
I never served, but my Dad was in long enough to retire, as was my Brother.
I fumigation with NyGuard IGR concentrate in combination with Ortho Bugclear in the summer. They say the Bugclear is for outdoor use, but my windows are open all summer, and bugs seem to regard my house as a bad neighborhood. The NyGuard is pricey, but it’s worth it.
1) Down stairs neighbor guy years ago was a slob; told him to put one of those blue toilet tank cleaners in and the ladies will think he cares and is trying to be clean.
2) Many years later, supervisor was retired navy; I asked him if he mopped his floors every day when he got home and he just grinned.
We are just the opposite. I’m organizing the space and my husband is grabbing the broom.
When we were visiting family, in NYC (who thankfully moved to Texas!).....we would see rats, but, never the roaches.
The rats were freaky enough. They scampered through the park, like they owned the place. 😱
I guess they did!
Fumigate. Darn spellcheck
I forgot-—I have fixed roof shingles
I have laid tile & grouted it
I have 5.58 acres—rural—high desert.
NO fencing here when I purchased property-—NOW 12 separate enclosures for horses.
226 T-posts-—160 wood gate & and bracing posts—Hot wire & non-hot wire. Over 2000 linear feet of fencing-—with multiple strands. OVER 2 1/2 miles of Hot wire alone.
I can also repair or build new wires for my charger with clamps soldered on each end of the pair—hot/ground. Heat & wind kill wires about every 3 years.
On last property-—I had dead/dying/crippled/crooked trees. I spent just under 3 years —daily—cutting down & chopping up those trees, as house was heated ONLY with wood stove. I USED UP 7 chains-—I am keeping them as achievement trophies. Stihl chain saw. Had over 7 1/2 years of wood I cut.
Still female-—moved to heavily treed house at age 53. Moved to high desert at age 65. Now 83. Moving slower-—but still trucking.
They have giant flying cockroaches in Southeast Asia (shudder). They really fly. And when you kill one, his buddies appear and haul off his body right away. I always wondered whether they were cannibals or just pallbearers.
Here in the Southern US we have Palmetto Bugs that normally live outside, but sometimes make their way indoors. They are ... utterly horrifying.
If the NYC regular cockroaches are that big and flighty, well, I reckon I’ll just stay down here.
I live in southern NJ and I don't own a firearm. Can't. I have an anxiety condition and have to sometimes take Xanax when it gets bad so I can't get a permit.Been meaning to get a pellet gun but got to do it on the sly if I do. They're illegal in this wretched state. I live on the edge on The New Jersey Pine Barrens.
Back in the summer just as dusk was coming on and I was cleaning up after cooking streaks for me and the wife I noticed a skunk come out from behind my shed. I have a big back yard.
I knew right away something was wrong with this thing. It was out in what was left of day light it was shaking, wobbling from side to side and acting erratic. Rabies for sure.
I had to beat the thing to death with a shovel.
I buried it quick. I sure as hell wasn't going to call the animal control people. They'd have been all over the place because my wife feeds a couple of stray cats in the yard.
We trapped those a few years ago and had them neutered and vaccinated. I like cats don't get me wrong but I'd love to get rid of the things because her putting out food for them is the dinner bell for skunks and raccoon.
We;ve got loads of those critters out here.
Btw good shooting on those snakes.
