Everyone likes what they like. But I never understood why U2 was so big. Just don’t get it.

Once upon a time, I respected him. It was several years ago. That’s all.

2. At 18, Bono had read Crime and Punishment – but he prefers the Ramones. The Jesuits in my high school made us read it by junior year - 16 years old.

I really enjoyed the first two albums. The second album, October, is actually one of the best Christian Rock albums as it doesn't try to shove religion into the songs.

Julie, you are sadly ignorant. Many song writers do not sing well. That doesn’t mean they are not fine musicians or composers. Oh, just by the way, many song singers can’t sing. It’s definitely difficult to tell these days with autotune and related electronic voice modifiers.

It’s his band, so of course, he’s the singer.

I’d put Bob Dylan in this category too. Brilliant songwriter and a lot of singers and bands have done nice covers of his tunes, but his nasal, monotone voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

What's the difference between God and Bono?
God doesn't walk around thinking he's Bono.

I saw U2 play a bowling alley in Asbury Park in NJ when they first came to the states.
Never really took to Bono’s minor chord singing. Some good guitar work, if a bit repetitious.

U2 music has not held up well. I heard ‘The streets have no name’ today - awful. Bono is a puker. On the other hand Blondie (Debbie Harry) has held up spectacularly well.

Whoever persuaded Bono he could sing?
Probably the same one who told him that the first "o" in "Bono" is short. I'll forgive Loni Anderson for a similar error because she was given the name by her parents who pronounced it that way.

He is a great rock star. And who cares if he can sing or not?
Tom Petty never had a great voice, but if you want to say Petty wasn’t a rock star, you’re just ignorant of the genre. I don’t like Bono’s political views, and don’t think I’ve bought any of their albums, but U2 and Bono have been succesful over decades. It’s not like Bono or U2 just accidentaly had a hit or two.
To: Rummyfan
Anyone who think Bono cannot sing very, very well is...well...stupid.
And devoid of discerning taste.

Yes his politics can be wacky—though he’s come around quite a bit recently—but there’s no denying the man can sing. This simple live acoustic performance is awesome:

I saw U2 in concert at the Hollywood Palladium in 1981, I think. It was a good show. But I lost interest a few years later when they became huge stars.
