NY House seat flipper Mike Lawler says it’s time for GOP to ditch Trump

The face of a red mini-wave in New York on Election Day says it’s time for the Republican Party to ditch former President Donald Trump and back another candidate for the White House in 2024.

“I would certainly like to see the party move forward. There are a lot of rising stars,” Congressman-elect Mike Lawler — who rocked the political world by defeating Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman — told The Post Thursday.

“Gov. Ron DeSantis has energized voters in the state of Florida. It’s always good to have new voices,” added Lawler, an assemblyman who will represent the Hudson Valley’s 17th District in Congress.

The GOP in New York picked up four House seats, including NY-17, increasing from seven to 11, which is being credited with potentially giving Republicans the margin to narrowly regain the House majority.

Trump is running in '24. Desantis will get crushed if he tries to go against Trump.

You will be voting for Trump in Nov. ‘24.

Get used to the idea.

Where else are you going to go?

Nice that he exposed himself. Saves a lot of future trouble. Let's see what he does for the Hudson Valley...hm...

doesn't Trump have property in the Hudson Valley? YES! and it's also the properties "Peekaboo" James is attacking.

"Three Hudson Valley properties were named in the civil lawsuit, including Seven Springs Estate in Bedford and two Trump National Golf Clubs in Briarcliff and Hopewell Junction."

So! Lawley is going to help her go after Trump.

Yeah, give the party back to Wall Street and the plaid-pants country-club set. The ones who gave us the Bushes, Romney, McConnell, open borders, permanent Obamacare, outsourcing to China, etc., etc., etc.

They’ll harp on this every damned day, and we should push back with everything we have.

I have no problem supporting Trump in 2024.

That said—I would prefer DeSantis be the nominee—not because I disrespect Trump but solely because I believe DeSantis would be more likely to win.

I can’t always get what I want—but it never hurts to ask.

;-)

I read the article. Nowhere was he quoted saying “ditch” Trump. I’m afraid we have some dishonest embellishment here.

He is quoted as saying the party should be open to new voices and we should go forward.

That headline is meant to incite.

His rallies 98% TRUMP, 2% candidates. That is why most of us can’t support him again.

And that is why people go. They don't go to see the candidates.

People don't go to concerts to see the opening acts. They pay and go to see the star.

If you can't support him as the Republican candidate for POTUS, will you vote democrat or independent or go fishing?

I don’t think so. He barely gave Zeldin a formal endorsement. I think he tried to stay away from politicking in NY, for obvious reasons.

I’m not seeing where he specifically said to dump Trump in the article.

"Did Trump endorse this A Hole?"

Not sure if he did, but the more important thing to note from the article is Lawler doesn't seem to be quoted as saying one thing about Trump directly.

As 1OldPro said above...

"I skimmed the article, headline doesn’t seem to match. Looks like the Post is getting TDS."

Take our individual opinions about Trump out of the equation. It's beginning to get a little concerning that the media is pushing the narrative of dumping Donald for Ron. We all need to take a moment and triangulate.

These people who want to “ditch Trump” can’t seem to stop talking about him. Therefore, they achieve the opposite.

I drove three hours each way to attend one of his rallies in my home state a few days before Election Day. I wouldn't have walked across the street to attend the rally if he wasn't there.

Trump generates excitement and energy. Even most of the candidates he endorses will attract votes, and little else beyond that.
