U.S. Believes Ukrainians Were Behind an Assassination in Russia [of Dugin's daughter]
The New York Times ^ | October 5th, 2022 | Julian Barnes, Adam Goldman and Adam Entous (Washington), Michael Schwirtz (Kiev)

WASHINGTON — United States intelligence agencies believe parts of the Ukrainian government authorized the car bomb attack near Moscow in August that killed Daria Dugina, the daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist, an element of a covert campaign that U.S. officials fear could widen the conflict.

The United States took no part in the attack, either by providing intelligence or other assistance, officials said. American officials also said they were not aware of the operation ahead of time and would have opposed the killing had they been consulted. Afterward, American officials admonished Ukrainian officials over the assassination, they said.

The closely held assessment of Ukrainian complicity, which has not been previously reported, was shared within the U.S. government last week. Ukraine denied involvement in the killing immediately after the attack, and senior officials repeated those denials when asked about the American intelligence assessment.

While Russia has not retaliated in a specific way for the assassination, the United States is concerned that such attacks — while high in symbolic value — have little direct impact on the battlefield and could provoke Moscow to carry out its own strikes against senior Ukrainian officials. American officials have been frustrated with Ukraine’s lack of transparency about its military and covert plans, especially on Russian soil.

I'd give the standard disclaimer that this is the NY Times, but so many Freepers (wherever they stand on the Russia/Ukraine conflict) have relied on sources which used to be anathema around here that those sorts of disclaimers don't really apply anymore.

Posted solely for the sake of discussion.

“could provoke Moscow to carry out its own strikes against senior Ukrainian officials...”

That horse has been out of the barn for 18 years now...

“parts of the Ukrainian government” ??

————
So if the CIA assassinated a target it would be “parts of the US Government” and not the “US assassinated”?

The land of neo-Nazism doesn't come close to resembling a free country or democracy.

Add this to the fact that Ukraine has used civilians as human shields, shelling a nuclear power plant and repeatedly targeted civilians in Donetsk.

And, the Biden regime is complicit in all of Ukraine's war crimes.

I wonder why the US is saying this now? Perhaps they are worried that Russia is about to do a tit for tat and assassinate a Western leader to even the score? I wonder if next they will try and blame the destruction of the pipelines on Ukraine too? Wouldn’t surprise me since the US is taking lots of heat for the destroyed pipelines and is looking to distract from its culpability. So we’ll blame Ukraine for that too now. These neocons are an incredibly incompetent bunch even their excuses are a joke.

By pushing this narrative, the United States is intentionally attempting to prod the Russians to retaliate. The nuclear October surprise?

United States intelligence agencies

Thr only reason they would release this to the New York Times would be if it were a lie.

This story just tells me how bad our “intelligence” is. They think the Ukrainians have those capabilities in the Moscow area and used them for this insignificant purpose? And they turned off the parking lot surveillance cameras weeks in advance? In my opinion this assassination was by the FSB, and no one else. The only question to me is whether Putin knew about it in advance.

I was thinking the same thing.
