Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

Biden had better think about rebuilding southwest Florida before sending a trillion to rebuild Ukraine!

I have no doubt hell will freeze over first.

Thanks for the thread.
Wish there would never have to be another one.

We are wondering how things are going in Charlotte. Anybody know? Elderly MIL all by herself. She sounded ok about an hour ago, but we are still concerned. When I say elderly, I mean 94 yo. One tough lady. Only a few things rattle her. No caregiver coming until tomorrow, if they don’t call off.

Thx.

Some error there, but my time is tight atm. Mainly causeway, causeway, causeway...

Landing A isn’t gone, there’s a 300 to 500’ breach. Doesn’t look too deep but who knows. The rest could be open in 30 days if motivated and unemcumbered by red tape, bid process, competing priorities, pork, etc.

Somebody... COE best guess, fished up 17 slab spans and reset them, then cut the ribbon in 2.5 weeks, on the NOLA/Lake P. Causeway after Katrina.

Dozers and pans already ON the McG/tollbooth approach, as of crack-o-dawn Thur.

We’ll see.

Checked the weather online it does not look like there are high wind but it is raining. I understand your concern, my Mom is 86 and lives in a 100 year old farmhouse on the water in MD.

Lights came back on about an hour ago. Wasn't expecting that!

Duke Energy is on the job, even in this mess.

I'm about 60 miles nw of Charlotte.

Randita,

Thank you for this detailed survey of the damage to Sanibel Island and your own situation.

My heart goes out to you. And truly, without golf, how does one keep one's sanity? (A little humor lightens the load!)

When looking at the camera videos before the wind takes them out and afterwards viewing the sandlots where once stood magnificent homes, my first thought is “how can mankind believe it has the power to change the ‘climate’?” Only a fool, or a mass hypnotized population, would have the hubris to think they have more power than Nature.

Well, didn't mean to get so serious but your devastation and that of untold thousands is mind boggling. I'm so sorry for your loss, but am grateful you and your neighbors are alive.

Freep regards,
The Westerner

At a gig, limited bandwidth of many varieties, but quick scan says Sanibel and at least the Blind Pass end of Captiva dodged a bullet. (Copyright jeffers, 2022, I just made this phrase up all by myself... ;-))

Gap in the eyewall?

Ft. Myers Beach and points east and south, obviously not. Lighthouse area and causeway, some sand moved around.

First floor sheetrock/insulation needs replaced... maybe second too. MUCH trash.

No new breaches. No wall of debris, no missing neighborhoods, no... bare sand.

There’s a breach on the second causeway landing that I hadn’t seen earlier. Both high sections... look.. intact.

Devil’s in the details.

Early yet, but I’m not bumming over anything seen yet on those two islands. Not compared to what.. probably... should.. have been.

My MIL is a smart woman. She still uses her PC, and can sort of deal with her Apple cell phone. Sometimes these days we have to explain things to her again, but for 94, this woman is incredibly with it. As I mentioned, she’s stubborn (German/Irish heritage) out the wazoo.

Mom isn’t into tech, but it’s her hometown and she has many friends and family nearby, and she is in great health.

That’s good! At 94, my MIL has lost most of her dearest friends. Her last remaining friend is in assisted living. She goes to visit her when she can, but she has *finally* given up driving. Thank goodness for that! Did I mention she was stubborn?

My own Mama passed 5 years ago (today!) and she was 2 years younger than my MIL. Cell phones freaked my Mama out. She was cool with landlines, but didn’t understand how cell phones worked, so it was always difficult to have a conversation with her from so far away.

Hope things continue to go well for your and your Mama. They are a treasure.

Just got cell service today. No power, no internet. Normally I can power my well pumps with the generator, but a tree fell on my water treatment shed, so no water till I rebuild that.

Very grateful we survived and the weather is miraculously cool.

Skeeters are next level vicious now.

Took a direct hit out here in Alva from Irma, thought this one would go further north.

I work on Sanibel and Captiva. Had a gig scheduled tonight at Sundial resort. The devastation is unreal, my dad and grandparents, all the old timers always tried to tell me my whole life how a real storm would remove entire islands and change the topography. This was that storm, can’t imagine that a cat 5 would’ve been even worse.

Y’all have prolly seen more news than us, I’ve only seen what we can see on the free “rabbit ears” tv antenna while the generator is running. We run it 1;2 hour or so every 2 to 3hours to keep the fridges and freezers cold.

4th generation FL cracker here, can you imagine before AC and mosquito control, (and before the amazing invention of the chainsaw for cleanup), no warning to speak of, back in the day?

I saw the edge of the eye from my front porch, it looked like a Q.

WWG1WGA, gotta sharpen the chains in the morning, my saws are spewing too much sawdust but they’ll be back to spitting chunks tomorrow 😎

If you look carefully you can see a break in the photo compilation at the west end of the causeway. The south end of Sanibel is impacted (boats scattered, trees stripped), but north of there including Captiva is an earlier photo as there is absolutely no damage.
