Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

Well, at least if it follows that track it won’t cause deadly landslides in Western NC, VA and Eastern KY. There have been hurricanes in the past that caused more deaths inland than on the coastline.

These days that's almost always the case.

I hesitate to use the word “interesting” but it will be a bit interesting to see what Ian does to the northeast Florida coast around Jacksonville and St Augustine.

Jax has a sizable commercial seaport as well as Mayport Naval Station and busy rail connections coming from both Tampa, Orlando and Miami. I have to believe there’s some definite flood-prone areas where the St Johns River comes in from the Atlantic Ocean.

Saint Augustine is prone to flooding too - especially Saint Augustine Beach and the downtown area.

Ha! Too funny. We may have avoided disaster again. Very Charley-like track. We are in the hotel with extended family. A hurricane party may ensue. Heck, the rooms are already paid. May as well make the most of it.

Two branches, four main forks.

Branch A, 36 hour stall with the eye onshore... or off. If offshore, the wind during the stall does NOT drive surge inland. If the eye is onshore, have the keys in your boat.

Branch B, 36 hour stall with the main feeder band onshore, or off. If onshore, the stall will dump MUCH less rain. If the main uptake/feeder area south of the eye is onshore... have the keys in your boat and a VERY long anchor chain, cuz surge AND rain WILL abound..
