EXCLUSIVE: NATO chief calls Putin's Ukraine escalation 'dangerous and reckless'

Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization of thousands of extra troops for the war in Ukraine will escalate the conflict and his threat to use nuclear weapons was "dangerous and reckless rhetoric," NATO's secretary general said on Wednesday.

Jens Stoltenberg told Reuters Editor in Chief Alessandra Galloni in an interview that Russia's first mobilization since World War Two was not a surprise but that it would escalate the conflict that began with the Russian invasion on Feb. 24.

Stoltenberg said Putin's moves demonstrated "that the war is not going according to his plans," Russian troops were ill-equipped and lacked proper command and control, and that it was clear that the Russian president had made "a big miscalculation."

Putin called up 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine and backed a plan to annex parts of the country, hinting to the West he was prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia.

"We will make sure that there is no misunderstanding in Moscow about exactly how we will react. Of course it depends upon what kind of situation or what kind or weapons they may use. The most important thing is to prevent that from happening and that is why we have been so clear in our communications with Russia about the unprecedented consequences," Stoltenberg said, referring to any Russian use of nuclear weapons.

A lot of people keep telling us how badly Putin is losing. And those same people, all of a sudden seem very, very frightened of Putin.

"dangerous and reckless rhetoric"

Exactly. Rhetoric. All talk, no hat. But some Freepers here will cower in fear.

America needs to get out of NATO now and without delay.

Agreed. I haven’t seen any evidence that Russia’s nukes still even work, considering the generally sorry state of their maintenance and equipment, and the fact that the last time it lit one off was in October 1990 (during its last underground test).

I think Putin is blustering with his nuke threats. That being said, it is wholly irresponsible to make such blustering statements.

Oh, please. Get us out of the UN first. NATO is not trying to take us down.

“A lot of people keep telling us how badly Putin is losing. And those same people, all of a sudden seem very, very frightened of Putin.”

Actually, the use of nuclear weapons is the wild card irregardless of how inept his conventional military forces appear to be functioning.

This speech proves Putin was losing yesterday and now he is threatening to start nuclear war and attacking with a huge new army because of it, which scares some people.

Different days.

There isn’t enough Ukrainian cannon fodder left for NATO to use to get Russia out of LPR and DPR once his new borders are up and they are dug in. It’s going to take NATO to mount that operation. This has been six months around the maypole. If NATO attacks the newly voted “Russian republics” a NATO meat grinder is your best hope. Remember, we want to avoid those very large blinding flashes. They’re immediately followed by something pretty terrible.

Not really. The bedwetting is from those who insist the US surrender its national interests to fascist Russia and its schoolyard taunts.
