She was no George Washington.
Wonderful post and you said it so well. We are mourning not just the loss a great lady and great queen, but also the loss of what she stood for. We already knew we had lost so much that is important and precious, but her passing is a marker, and feels like the turning of the last page of a good chapter we did not ever want to end.
Yes, we — and our Founding Fathers — are the heirs of a rich history going back to Magna Carta, Albert the Great and before. Our Founders conserved the best of English law and principle in our Constitution, reshaping it as befitted our new nation in the New World.
I can trace my family back to England, too, as many, many Americans can. Doing genealogy teaches us how we stand on the shoulders of those gone before us in such a personal and profound and humbling way. But even if my ancestors came from elsewhere, I would still have a deep appreciation for our English heritage as a nation, not just of blood but more importantly of ideas and ideals, of freedom, of individual rights, of justice, Judeo-Christian values and more.
I have lived among and worked alongside other citizens of the Anglosphere, British, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians — and keenly felt our special common bonds. Most Americans admired Queen Elizabeth as a person and for her so ably fulfilling her role as Queen of the UK, even though we want no part of monarchy for our own country.
Somehow perhaps we realize she had more in common with our own great national and cultural icon George Washington, who fought and won a war against her country long ago, when it comes to matters of character and civility than our current president does.
Charles is simply non-impressive. I would say he’s the picture of a man who has been consistent in what he believes he’s entitled - far more than his worth.
William and Kate, on the other hand, have paid their dues and respected for the life they’ve led.

Me: Almost in all of history, but Louis XIV reigned for over 72 years, Queen Elizabeth for over 70. She came very close to beating out the lecherous old coot for the title, though. She wore more sensible shoes, too.
I think once Philip passed she felt very alone and was in the process of shifting duties to other royals. Philip died in April last year so she lived another year and four months or so after he had gone. It’s not unusual for long married couples to die close to each other in terms of time. The Queen considered Philip her rock.
For those journalists and scholars who read these posts - many of us do not write a /s (sarcasm mark) although we should. Please look up the word ‘sarasm’ and draw your conclusions appropritely.
My parents died within 18 months of each other. Same with my husband’s parents. 😢

My dad was stationed in England for 5 years, from 1957 until 1962, so I got to watch the Queen on the telly during special ceremonies. My mother even let me stay home from school one day to watch Princess Margaret marry Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey. Sure, it was in black and white, but it was still a beautiful occasion. For a 6 yo girl like me, it was a fairy tale.
I remember her. She was beautiful and talented, but I’ve never seen such a tiny waist on an adult female. There’s gotta be a story there somewhere.
Nice memories of your youth. We had a black and white console TV. Can't remember what year we finally got a color TV. I do remember the first time I got to watch TV in color. A childhood friend on the street invited us over on a Sunday night to watch Walt Disney's weekly show. That was sometime in the 50's.
I managed to visit England twice in 2006 and 2007. I booked a 3 week bus tour of the British Isles with Trafalger. It was my first time going overseas. I flew over a week ahead of the tour starting because I wanted to be able to do some sightseeing in and around London. I had a bucket list of places I wanted to visit during that week, and managed to get everything done. Managed to get a room at the same hotel the tour was leaving from. It was just down the street from Victoria Station....about 1 1/2 miles from Buckingham Palace. I got there on a Saturday. The next day I took a walk over there. Turns out they were celebrating the anniversary of the Royal Marines, and a big parade of veterans, and several bands came marching by. I walked my feet off that day. Finally ended up at Waterloo Station 2 1/2 miles away. Too old now to travel like that. My knees would never take the walking.

Several people on an earlier thread already told you that the Queen made the decision and announced it earlier this year as part of her Platinum Jubilee that she wanted Camilla to be called “Queen Consort.” It’s not a lie.
