She had as much control over the archbishop of Canterbury as Henry II did Becket... i.e: none.

"Wow, she was England's Queen my whole life and I'm 71!"

I'm 75, but was too young to remember when her father was King. I can't say that I remember her being crowned Queen, because I wasn't yet 5. She's been the only British monarch I have known my whole life.

Some branches of my mother's side of the family came from England and Wales. I can't confirm anything, but I am allegedly related not only to the Plantagenets, but also, possibly to the Bruce's. I've been a history buff for many years, and was interested in the history of England, long before I knew of my family connections. That being said, I had a lot of respect for Elizabeth II based on my knowledge of the history of the English throne. She was a saint compared to many other Kings and Queens through the centuries. God rest her soul. I'm assuming that the investiture of William as the new Prince of Wales will take place at some point in the future, perhaps once Charles is crowned at Westminster Abbey.

She could have refused to approve of the Abortion Act. The King of Belgium did in his country.

“These things aren’t “day to day politics”, they’re the overall trajectory of a nation.”

I agree with you. We don’t even know what her opinion was of the immigration mess, but she wouldn’t have shared with any public figure because she couldn’t have trusted any of them.

The monarchy is supposed to be for charities and fundraising, engaging socially with foreign dignitaries, supporting the troops and encouragingthe people, etc. In other words show people. In her life she also was very engaged with the commonwealth and keeping it together as she was very old school. She didn’t campaign for her title, it was thrust upon her.

She never had a proper education for a ruler as it wasn’t ever thought she would be Queen. I think she filled her role well.

Good question, pinging Jamestown.

Too all Freepers from Canada, UK, Australia and elsewhere in the commonwealth, I offer deep condolences for a woman who did a tremendous job of a difficult office for over 70 years. Royalty being outside the USA traditions, I have admired her performance of the task for her native lands. It is a giant of a figure passing from the world stage.

"Will Biden go to her funeral? Or send Harris? Either alternative seems appalling."

I figured Buckingham Palace will invite the Obamas so it doesn't look like anyone there is a racist, as they have been accused of by Harry and Meaghan. We know the only way President Trump would be invited, would be if they planned to have him assassinated.

I would assume that new currency will picture the King, and the old currency will remain in circulation. There may be commemorative issues featuring her into the future.

Curious now that she’s passed, how Charles is going to deal with Harry and his wife

Well, here’s some good news, The Sun is reporting that Rail and Royal Mail strikes have been called off following Her Majesty’s passing.

At least the ones planned for the middle of this month.

She is currently only on the $20 banknote in Canada. Used to be on them all once. Also on all coins still though. The money is still good. Older coins with her father on them were as well.

Queen Mother was a title used specifically for the dowager Queen, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother to avoid confusion with her daughter.

"That’s what I worry about. Of course, if he does inject himself in political issues, he will not be loved as a King."

Very true. As the monarch of England, the King or Queen doesn't get to pick who their subjects are. They are the monarchs of all British subjects, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Any personal opinions are kept to yourself, or within a very small, private group. Even if Queen Elizabeth kept a very detailed private diary during her 70 years of reign, I doubt it will ever see the light of day. People would likely never be told about it, and/or it could be ordered destroyed by family members. Queen Victoria's family chose to destroy a lot of her personal correspondence after she died.
