As Serena Williams' her playing career ended Friday night, there's a good case to be made that she is the greatest female player of all time.
Even so, facts still matter. And in extolling Serena, CNN got one fact glaringly wrong. Co-host John Berman brought on CNN sports correspondent Carolyn Manno, who claimed:
"What Brianna [Keilar] said at the top, the longevity piece, is so important. Because she is in the pantheon of all-time greats. But she has outlasted Michael Jordan and Tom Brady."
Serena has outlasted Tom Brady??
Serena is retiring at age 40. Tom Brady is 45, and is about to begin his 22nd season in the NFL, playing as the starting QB of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Very strong 300-pounders will be looking to pound him into the turf—something that rarely occurs on a tennis court.
CNN also focused on Serena saying in her post-match interview that throughout her career, she has been playing with "an X on my back."

Obviously I can’t say for certain if she did steroids, but from her early career to now, she had the look of someone using steroids. She even has the ‘roid’ temper.
Something like that... Certainly a very low ranked male tennis player crushed her.
She and sister Venus boasted that they could beat any male player ranked 200 or lower. A fellow ranked 297 in the world challenged them both and beat them both handily. They later said they could beat anyone ranked 300 or lower, but never again made the mistake of playing a decent male player.
She’s going to balloon to over 400 pounds within a few years.
They are pitting Williams against Brady. You don’t have to take the bait. You can just walk away, or if you have to, you can attack CNN, rather than Williams.
How has she outlasted Brady? Brady won a Super Bowl in 2021. She hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since 2017.

Karsten Braasch didn't just beat them, he beat them back to back 6-1 and 6-2 despite not even warming up. Afterwards he called it that they wouldn't be able to beat someone ranked 500 or better.
