The drinking water system in Jackson — Mississippi’s largest city and home to more than 160,000 residents — is failing, state officials announced on Monday. Thousands of Jackson residents already have no or little water pressure, and officials cannot say when adequate, reliable service will be restored.
The city water system has been plagued with problems for years, including tens of thousands of residents losing water between one and three weeks during a 2021 winter storm.
At a press conference Monday night, Gov. Tate Reeves said the city’s largest water treatment plants may be completely down.
“The O.B. Curtis plant is not operating anywhere near full capacity,” Reeves said. “We may find out tomorrow it’s not operating at all. We’ll have better visibility on that when we get in there tomorrow.”
Reeves announced he would sign an emergency declaration for the capital city’s water system and create an “incident command center” to distribute water to the city’s residents beginning Tuesday morning.
“Until it is fixed, it means we do not have reliable running water at scale,” Reeves said. “It means the city cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets, and to meet other critical needs.”

Granted. But as the system ages and shows impending signs of failure, the admin on the latter side of the problem are far more culpable.
I hate to say it, but the untrained “damp posteriors” who are just banging nails are producing horrible homes and other projects all over the place. It is a quick and dirty proposition, covered with a pretty veneer.
My town of less than 50,000 started reworking it’s water system about 20 years ago.
It removed old clay tile water supply lines which were collapsing and replaced them with proper steel pipes. The old clay pipes were nearly 100 years old and could not withstand a ‘high flow’ situation - like a fire.
Then one winter morning in 2009 a gas explosion rocked downtown Bozeman, MT and over the course of five days more than 10,000,000 gallons were used to put out the fire. Five buildings were destroyed with, lucky, only one fatality.
If the city had not replaced the water system the fire would have been out of control fairly quickly as the water supply pipes would have collapsed. There would have been no way - other than tanker trucks to deliver water to the fire - tankers which could NEVER deliver 2,000,000 gallons of water per day..
The fire was compounded by having NO gas shut-off valve and it took nearly 48 hours to install a valve and stop the gas flow.
The mayor said it would cost $200 million to fix the water system. That is, of course, ridiculous.
Tell them to call Papa Joe. Papa Joe fixes everything.
I suspect in about a month it will look a whole lot more like Somalia.
Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba
Jackson MS meets Flint MI, any similarity as to who is in the city government?
Chokwe Antar Lumumba is an American attorney, activist and politician serving as the 53rd mayor of Jackson, Mississippi.
But, I’m sure you knew that.. :)
Don’t worry! at least everyone’s pensions are safe! Screw the infrastructure.
30 years of kicking the can by deferring maintenance. “Progressives” rarely face consequences of their actions.
Chokwe Antar Lumumba took his name from his father who was also mayor of Jackson MS for a few months before he died of a heart attack. The elder Chokwe Lumumba's real name was Edwin Finley Taliaferro but he changed it after he got involved with a black nationalist group called the Republic of New Afrika which claimed most of the southeast U.S. as it's homeland. He probably did get the idea of the name from Patrice Lumumba.
The father, like the son, was a con man & grifter in the mold of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, just not as well known nationally. As long as people like these are running Jackson MS it'll always be a cesspool.
Jeez, it’s pathetic when a person feels embarrassed to admit having certain gut reactions to a story because it is too simple minded to just jump to conclusions.
And then, yup, a person was right after all.
Every thing the democrats touch turns to shit.
yew have to be kidding
unfreaking believable, yet it is
Get a load of this. Like something out of Road Warrior.
They claim all the money is going to infrastructure but nothing gets repaired. The money goes into RAT pockets and they live large while the people suffer.
I suspect the smaller the town, the harder it is to skim/cheat without killing infrastructure. So they tried the NYC/Chicago/SF plan and it is biting them in the @ss.
