Hopefully the long, hard road Gibson’s Bakery has traveled in its fight with Oberlin College has come to an end.
The Ohio Supreme Court just refused to accept jurisdiction over Oberlin College’s appeal (the Court also refused to hear the Gibsons’ appeal seeking to reinstate the full punitive damages award). It was a 4-3 decision, and it means the Gibsons now can collect approximately $36 million.
They were trying to collapse the bakery’s legal effort by dragging it out. Oberlin is run by leftist scum. To anyone who knows anything about the college, their actions should be no surprise. Lawyers who want to make a lot of money should start suing these institutions left and right. I’m sure you can get them for creating unsafe environments on campus. There are victims galore if you just look for them.
Oberlin is exactly the kind of school which survives off massive student debt made by Fed.gov.
“I’ll be surprised if the Gibsons get everything they’re owed.”
That would make Oberlin the institutional equivalent of an O J Simpson, at least in terms of following court orders regarding payment of penalties. And no, that wouldn’t surprise me in the least, if they can pull it off - I’m sure they think their self-assumed moral superiority justifies whatever they can get away with.
They really haven’t won until Oberlin pays up. I won’t really be surprised if they just don’t pay.
Because so many who lose litigation try to conceal money and otherwise fudge legal decisions, there are legal agent detectives skilled at tracking down hidden accounts, overseas accounts, straw trustees, etc.
And while Oberlin *probably* wouldn’t try such stunts, it would be well worth it to retain some real pitbull agents, because it is highly likely that Oberlin has lots of black accounts used to evade taxes, buy politicians, and otherwise engage in nefarious activities.
When you turn in big tax evaders to the IRS, they give you a chunk of the asset seizure they make.
President Trump needs to set out a “first day” agenda for when he is reelected.
One of the items needs to be completely eliminating all federal funding, in any form, for all non-STEM higher education.
Oberlin posted a bond. The bonding company pays if they don’t.
Lefties are correct - the way laws are applied in this country, justice is not blind.
It’ll be a couple of years before they can cut a check, paperwork don’t ya know
I agree. The Gibsons will never see a dime.

Student at ultra-liberal $80,000-a-year Oberlin College complains that contractors hired to install radiators in ‘women and trans safe space’ dorm rooms were ‘cisgender men’
Perfect the judgement and start auctioning off the college buildings :-)
“how can they enforce payment?“
Writs of garnishment, attachment, and execution.
I believe if you lose in State Supreme Court you can only appeal to SCOTUS. They would need some novel rationale to get SCOTUS to hear it. Wah, wah, wah the dog ate my homework probably won’t get heard.
“I bet Oberlin will still not pay”
Now that the end of the road to appeals has ended, Gibson’s has lots of options, all while the interest continues to accrue, they can:
- Issue a garnishment against their bank accounts
- Perfect liens against Oberlin’s property
- The local Sheriff’s office can seize on-site cash from Oberlin, or property and equipment with market value, (cars, buses, servers, etc)
At this point, Oberlin is merely prolonging their suffering, and the amount they will eventually have to pay.
They are taking glee in withholding the windfall payment to the Gibson’s because they have convinced themselves that the bakery is racist. Liberalism is a sickness with no known cure, besides war.
Still, Oberlin's desire to twist the knife cost them a lot of interest money (something like $10 million, I believe).
I think two of them died, the dad (of pancreatic cancer) and grand dad, who was 93.
Oberlin doesn't care about having to come up with the extra interest, it's not their money. They just wanted to create as much misery as they could for the Gibsons.
Best news all day.
