Russian paratrooper reveals how he had NO idea he was invading Ukraine until the shelling started and tells how his comrades were slaughtered while using rusty machine guns and 'the tactics of our grandfathers'
Pavel Filatiev, 33, highlights Russian army's shortcomings in explosive new book Paratrooper Pavel was part of invading force, but quit on medical grounds He now opposes war and said: 'We had no moral right to attack another country'
Soldiers under Putin are 'dissatisfied' and under-supplied amid 'terrible war'
Mr Filatiev, 33, dressed in his army uniform, was part of Russia's invading forces on February 24. But now he opposes the 'terrible war' Russia had 'no moral right' to begin
Putin's soldiers had no idea they were invading Ukraine until they took return fire from Kyiv forces, an ex-paratrooper in the Russian army has revealed in an explosive new memoir.
Pavel Filatiev, 33, says his elite unit was moved to the border with Ukraine after he had seen talk of a planned invasion in the world's media, but that they were sent in with no warning that they'd be facing enemy forces.
His memoir also tells how he was given a rusty machine gun and an ill-fitting uniform, and that his comrades were wiped out because they were using 'our grandfathers' tactics'.
He said he woke up to the sound of gunfire in the back of an army truck crossing the border at 2am on February 24, the day the invasion began.
Filatiev asked: 'Are we firing at advancing Ukrainians?
'Where we were going and why wasn't clear. It was clear that a real war had begun. I found out [we had] orders to go to Kherson.'

So the russian weapons, in service on the steps of Russia, were all rusty, but the same weapons in service deep in the jungles of Vietnam were good to go? Packed down the Ho chi min trail on the backs of 5 ft nothing humans and trail mules no less. With logistics like that I am sure the vietcong and nva had an absolute surplus of cleaning oils ect.
Does no one even think things through a little bit anymore? You could probably store those guns outside for a year on the steps of Russia and accumulate less rust than a month in the jungles of vietnam.
The story should’ve said they received guns with shot out barrels, that I might have been able to believe.
“LOL! you fools will buy anything, it’s hilarious.”
I have a serious question for you. Since numerous Russian soldiers and their families have said that they didn’t know they were really going to war, why do you dismiss this? I mean, what logical, rational reason do you have for thinking the opposite of what seems to be true according to the evidence? The evidence is that Russia invaded Ukraine and did so with ill-prepared forces who had little or no idea they were unwelcomed invaders of Ukraine. That’s what all the evidence shows. So what do you have to counter that other than , “I’ll summarily dismiss everything you say”?
Counterattack and Germans, something the enemy could count on.
Well, at least you’re in great company with Biden, the Dems, the US and British media, Hollywood elite and Soros.
My friend who was a Soviet paratrooper during the Cold War can attest to the reality of this article. The few Soviet soldiers I was able to speak to in Berlin complained of many similar things.
We also knew long ago that Soviet (Russian) tank commanders and armored vehicle crews were NOT given maps of their operating area.
Armored columns are directed where to turn on road marches by dismounted Spetznatz at key intersections. We were trained to take out the guides and reroute the columns into ambush areas. (No, we never had to do this, but it was something we rehearsed often.)
The extreme majority of troops who crossed the Ukraine border on Feb 24 still thought they were on a live fire training exercise. The Maneuver Group commanders and their staff knew the truth.
I can’t imagine fighting for a machine that doesn’t communicate with the troops, but throws them into the grinder on purpose. We were given OPORDS that were extremely specific before crossing the LOD, and actions on the objective were well rehearsed for every mission, as well as after action extraction and re-entry into friendly lines. SOPs didn’t need to be mentioned, but every mission specific aspect was covered before action.
They don’t do that for their soldiers.
Very true.
Just an old rag and some WD40 or motor oil and it’s back to prime condition.
So why can’t Russia close this deal once and for all? Six months into a war against a military 1/10th their size and they can’t finish the job. I mean they will win eventually, right.....?
-—Why?——
It’s historically very simple. When thinking of Russia, there is actually no there there.
The population of Russia is smaller than the Indonesian island of Jave.
The economy of Russia ranks lower than Canada and South Korea. And, that ranking is entirely the result of foreign companies who came to Russia and set up shop. They have almost all left.
In the very essence, Russia is still a land of serfs
Russians are not that bright and there is no initiative permitted at the unit level. All plans , all tactics are from the top. That is either inherently Russian or inherited from the Soviet regime.
he was given a rusty machine gun and an ill-fitting uniform, and that his comrades were wiped out because they were using ‘our grandfathers’ tactics’.
and he claims to be airborn???
things that make you go hummmmm...
Or maybe they aren't able to do it.
“No, the obvious evidence is that Russia drew a red line ...”
Red line, line in the sand, whatever you call it RUSSIA INVADED UKRIANE first in 2014 and then again in 2022.
I cannot understand why the pro-Russia crowd here can’t even admit that Russian troops crossed borders (that even THEY recognized) into Ukrainian territory without the permission of the gov’t of Ukraine that was even recognized by Russia. That’s an invasion.
And I knew there was a good chance you would fail to even attempt to answer my questions.
Instructive video on mission, make up from company level, and TOE...short comings re:Ukraine, aside from political micro managing and overall piss poor command generals.
Seems like full mobilization is out of the cards. Wagner Group is currently recruiting from prisoners to replenish their cannon fodder in Ukraine.
Before the Soviets, they were ruled by the Tsars. At that time, most of the population were Serfs.
good stuff...
If the troops are fighting with rusty weapons, they need to look in the mirror to see who to blame.
