A video about what it means to fly the American flag upside down.
You are correct. Flying the flag upside down is intended to be a request for help with an immediate physical danger, not a signal of political disgruntlement. You could think of it as the visual equivalent of calling 911. Call 911 to complain that you don’t like the current government and see what happens.
But you’ll never convince a lot of people of that. To all too many, it’s OK to disrespect the flag as long as you’re doing it from patriotic motives. The logic of that is hard to follow.
How about not raising the American flag but raise the Rattlesnake “Don’t Tread on Me!” Flag?
Dye it black.
Referring to this event as no more than the result of a political disagreement and use of the American flag to send a distress signal as disrespectful seems both an enormous understatement and emotional overstatement.
How would you judge a platoon leader that calls an air strike on his overrun position? At what point should he make the call?
Just take the flag down. Quietly. Then wait.

Improper display of the flag is disrespectful to it, period. As for your platoon-leader thing, that’s completely irrelevant. Are you actually being overrun by people who are firing real bullets at you, right now?
I think itβs important to educate the public, donβt you?
HELL YES!!
The design of the flag came from General Washington’s secretary, Colonel Joseph Reed. In a letter dated October 21, 1775, Reed suggested a “flag with a white ground and a tree in the middle, the motto AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN” be used for the ships Washington commissioned.[2]
The following summer, on July 26, 1776, the Massachusetts General Court established the flag of the state navy with a resolution that stated in part: “...that the Colours be a white Flag, with a green Pine Tree, and an Inscription, ‘Appeal to Heaven’.”

Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
A distress signal appears warranted.
The authority in this spot is under civilian control and we reject any status of war.
“Then the question becomes just whom will be helping US in response to the signal ?”
The American people.
Halfway anyhow.
As for your platoon-leader thing, thatβs completely irrelevant. Are you actually being overrun by people who are firing real bullets at you, right now?
"Completely irrelevant"? Analogies are not always exactly relevant or they wouldn't be analogies. The point in this one is that no one is currently firing bullets at us.
You can have the last word. Have a nice day.
Mines been down since the Usurper was fraudulently inaugurated.
OK, then, here goes. Try reading what I first posted, then try reading the Flag Code. Displaying the flag upside-down is meant as a distress signal only in the case of immediate physical peril. It is proper to fly the flag upside-down only in that case. If no one is actually, physically attacking you, you should not fly the flag upside-down; to do otherwise is an improper display of the flag.
It seems that a lot of this business of flying the flag upside-down because the nation is in distress comes from the fact that the word “distress” can be taken to mean different things. What the Flag Code refers to is actual, immediate, physical danger to individuals. People conflate that meaning with danger of bad things happening to the nation as a whole. It is absurd to think that the latter reason to fly the flag upside-down would be justified in the Flag Code, or it would specify that all flags should be flown upside-down in times of national peril.
What it comes down to is the inability of a lot of people to distinguish between actual violence and mere political butt-hurt. This is a pretty snowflakey way of looking at things, in my opinion, but you and I seem to differ in that respect.
I still fail to understand why you think your platoon-leader fantasy has anything at all to do with display of the flag. The guy would be better off using the radio. Analogies should have at least something to do with the topic. Oh well, if you’re happy with it, what the hell.
In any case, disrespect, and even outright desecration, of the flag has been held to be protected free speech. Do as you please with your own flag, and have a wonderful day.
