~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Sill, Oklahoma

OKfortsill1

Fort Sill is a United States Army post north of Lawton, Oklahoma, about 85 mile southwest of Oklahoma City. It covers almost 94,000 acres.

The fort was first built during the Indian Wars. It is designated as a National Historic Landmark, and serves as home of the United States Army Field Artillery School as well as the Marine Corps' site for Field Artillery MOS school, United States Army Air Defense Artillery School, the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, and the 75th Field Artillery Brigade. Fort Sill is also one of the four locations for Army Basic Combat Training.

It has played a significant role in every major American conflict since 1869.

The United States Army Field Artillery School (USAFAS) trains Field Artillery Soldiers and Marines in tactics, techniques, and procedures for the employment of fire support systems in support of the maneuver commander. The school further develops leaders who are tactically and technically proficient, develops and refines warfighting doctrine, and designs units capable of winning on future battlefields.

OKfortsill5

The 434th Field Artillery Brigade is a training/ artillery unit under the United States Army Fires Center of Excellence, a formation under TRADOC. The brigade conducts Basic Combat Training for new enlistees in the U.S. Army.

434th Field Artillery Brigade conducts reception operations and Basic Combat Training by integrating and transforming civilian volunteers into disciplined, motivated and fit Soldiers in order to provide the Army with competent and confident warfighters willing to live the Army Values.

OKfortsill4

Another special detachment is the Field Artillery Half Section, an eight-man group representative of the "flying artillery" which was drawn by a team of horses (the Half Section has eight horses – all named after former commanding generals of Fort Sill) around the turn of the 20th century. The Half Section was established in 1969 to celebrate Fort Sill's Centennial.

The Soldiers are volunteers for the show group, while the horses, their equipment and transportation are provided through charitable donations. The popular Half Section has appeared in regional parades, local festivities, change of command ceremonies and a presidential inauguration parade.

This is very interesting and a tribute to our Vietnam heroes!! Please share.

The REAL Walking Dead: 1st Battalion, 9th Marines in Vietnam

This is the history of The Walking Dead.

https://www.skillsetmag.com/the-real-walking-dead-1st-battalion-9th-marines-in-vietnam/

“... When you think of The Walking Dead, what comes to mind—zombies, Rick Grimes, Negan and his beloved, barbwire-laced bat, “Lucille”?

Forget what you think you know about The Walking Dead—the real Walking Dead, the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), endured more hell on Earth in the jungles of Vietnam in the late 1960s than any fiction writer could ever recount. “The Walking Dead” Marines of One-Nine earned their nickname after suffering the highest casualty rate of any unit during the war.

In fact, the horrors of the fictional The Walking Dead television series pale in comparison to the real horrors of Vietnam suffered by the Marines of the 1/9. Operation Buffalo, Operation Big Horn II, Khe Sanh, Dewey Canyon and a long list of other hard-fought battles by the 1/9 resulted in two Walking Dead Marines earning the Medal of Honor, 18 more receiving the Navy Cross and 60 earning Silver Stars. ...

Humility Is the Truth
Read: James 4:1–11

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10

Reflecting one day on why God values humility so highly, sixteenth-century believer Teresa of Avila suddenly realized the answer: “It is because God is the supreme Truth, and humility is the truth. . . . Nothing good in us springs from ourselves. Rather, it comes from the waters of grace, near which the soul remains, like a tree planted by a river, and from that Sun which gives life to our works.” Teresa concluded that it’s by prayer that we anchor ourselves in that reality, for “the whole foundation of prayer is humility. The more we humble ourselves in prayer, the more will God lift us up.”

Teresa’s words about humility echo the language of Scripture in James 4, where James warned of the self-destructive nature of pride and selfish ambition, the opposite of a life lived in dependence on God’s grace (vv. 1–6). The only solution to a life of greed, despair, and constant conflict, he emphasized, is to repent of our pride in exchange for God’s grace. Or, in other words, to “humble yourselves before the Lord,” with the assurance that “he will lift you up” (v. 10).

Only when we’re rooted in the waters of grace can we find ourselves nourished by the “wisdom that comes from heaven” (3:17). Only in Him can we find ourselves lifted up by the truth.Monica La Rose

How does pride hinder true prayer and experience of God’s grace? How have you experienced the freedom of humility through prayer?

Loving God, thank You for the gift of life with You. Thank You that I don’t need to be more than I am. Thank You that in You I find all that I need and more.

Hiya radu!

Not much happening with me over the weekend, just visiting the pups and Robin and that's about it, (that I can remember, LOL).

We have a few more triple digit days to contend with and then slowly cooling down a bit.

How about you, did you get out to the museum?

Howdy, PRO!

Ugh! Still roasting up there, are you? I guess the cold front moving across the country must have slipped down east of you and left you out. We have a stretch of highs in the 80s ahead and that sure will be nice!

Yes, I did go to the museum. It was a slow weekend. Friday was very rainy so we didn’t expect much traffic. Saturday was nice but pretty toasty.

But I still managed to have some fun Saturday. There’s a guy named Walter who pops by the museum fairly regularly to hang out for a while and he was there that morning. He normally shows up in his truck but he was in his Jeep this time. Not sure of the exact year but it’s a ‘40s Jeep. He’s a WWII re-enactor and the Jeep is part of the gear he takes to events.

Being a slow day, we were all sitting around chatting. They were talking about the 4th of July parade at Sewanee and how much fun they had with the museum’s vehicles they drove in it. I mentioned how much I enjoy getting to ride in some of the museum’s vehicles when the rare opportunity arises.
Walter looked at me and said, “Wanna go for a ride?” I said, “Any chance I get.” He said, “No time like the present. Let’s go.”
He didn’t have to say it twice! LOL!

We hopped in the Jeep and he asked if I wanted to go on the road or cross country and I told him he was the driver and I was just along for the ride. So off we went into the big field next to the museum and rode all around that. Then we took off into the woods behind the museum. Some rich fella bought a chunk of the woods to build a house and we were curious as to what’s been done back there. He had a nice gravel driveway from the highway into the woods put in last fall and we could hear a lot of tree cutting being done, but have seen no activity this year. He has a gate across the drive at the edge of the woods. Didn’t stop Walter! LOL

It was such a blast to ride around with him. He is such a character and fun to be around, and I loved riding in the Jeep.

But I paid for it big time. The ol’ bum back was NOT happy about being bounced and I hurt a lot that night. Yesterday was a do-nothing day and it paid off. I’m still being careful but I managed to get the grocery shopping done this evening.

I should have known better but I just couldn’t pass up the chance for the fun I had. If I’m just slowed down for a day or so, I’ll do it again!
