The good Samaritan who shot and killed the gunman who opened fire in the Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana on Sunday afternoon reportedly broke the property's policy against weapons.
The suspected shooter entered the mall on Sunday carrying a rifle and multiple magazines and opened fire in the food court, killing at least three and injuring three before he was shot to death. Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said the suspected shooter was killed by a "good Samaritan with a handgun."
The mall is owned by Simon Property Group, and the group's code of conduct, last updated in April of 2020, lists "No weapons" as number three.

Ironically, Simon Property Group, locally, put out a statement of grievance with the family and praised the kid that stopped the mass killing. No mention of their "no gun" policy in the press release.
Thanks. I’m going to save that sign, print up multiples on label paper and stick them to entrance doors of ANY facility which has such a sign on the door (no weapons policy).
I suggest others do the same. Formatting an 8.5x11 half sheet of labels for multiples should result in a cost/sticker of only 5 cents or so for a package of the half sheet shipping labels (free if you use UPS and have their materials on hand). The package cost is under 23 bucks from Office Depot; I have people at work who will pitch in for mine (I don’t think I need >200 of these).

A jury at the state level found Cinemark wasn't liable in the shooting in their Aurora Colorado theater. A Federal judge dismissed a separate suit based on the state case although the appeals are still in the works.

Potential civil liability is up to a jury and the more shootings there are with disparate outcomes, juries will more likely find the property owners and managers liable for removing protection from patrons.
Newsweek is pissed that the body count wasn’t much much higher by the criminal before he got shot because now it’s not that huge anti-gun weeks long story that they clamor for. It also,goes agaisnt their “nobody needs a gun” mentality

I was in another Simon property on the north side of Indianapolis, and was escorted out for CCW a few years ago.
I took my daughter to the mall, and we went to the Williams-Sonoma store, when we saw a huge line of middle-aged women all holding the same cook book. They were having them signed by some lady. We bypassed the line and went inside and it was that Garth Brooks fella’s wife, signing her cookbook.
As we were shopping, my daughter was goofing around and grabbed my shirt, accidentally exposing my appendix carry. Some hag let out a gasp and said, “He’s got a GUN!”
As we were leaving the store, a mall cop started following me and then he walked in front of me and pointed to my waist. He asked me if I was carrying a gun and I said yes. He told me it was forbidden and that I had to leave the mall. So, I walked out of the mall with him following me.
I still carry a gun in that mall, because it’s taken on a portion of the “hood” population. The one thing this mall doesn’t have (thank GOD) is a sneaker store. Those things are ghetto magnets.

I’d be curious to hear from FR attorneys about the potential civil liability of the property owner in a scenario where a “gun-free” zone is established and someone comes in and shoots the place up anyway.

Well, then the GOOD SAMARITAN should leave the premises immediately upon being asked to leave.
Private property rights come into play, and as a business owner I will side with the malls choice here.
If they put the sign up but don’t search or use metal detectors they are covering their ass in the event of a shooting, at least a little. They know there are people who will ignore it, both good and bad, and so I think this is their way of appeasing everyone, especially the suburban housewife with her kids who will (falsely) feel safer being able to lie to themselves that that sign will help protect them.
If you are seen with it, you a asked to take it out to your vehicle, secure it, and you are welcome to come back in, I have the same policy here at my business with my employees. I don’t want my employees walking around my shop strapped. If they want to bring it in and secure it in their toolbox I am okay with that as well, but there is no reason to have one on them here at all.
Your right to carry ends at my door, period. Emotions flair here on occasion, I don’t need a firearm involved. I would never stop you from having one in your vehicle for the ride to and from, and the mall doesn’t either.
Good point. Companies like Simon Property try to claim that their public shopping centers and malls are private property when it benefits them, but public places when that benefits them.
They have little ability to enforce their supposed rules, and they certainly have no relevance in this situation.
Did anyone at Newsweek complain about BLM protestors violating the rules posted in private businesses during the BLM protests and riots?
If I was a family member of one the poor people killed, I’d sue the mall owners into oblivion for (a) having the rule and (b) not enforcing it against the scumbag. Hey, might not win, but would spend every penny trying.
