NAPLES, Italy -- On July 8, 2022, an F/A-18 Super Hornet assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, embarked aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), blew overboard due to unexpected heavy weather in the Mediterranean Sea. The carrier was conducting a replenishment-at-sea, which was safely terminated through established procedures. All personnel aboard the ship are accounted for.
One Sailor received minor injuries while conducting operations during the unexpected heavy weather. The Sailor is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
USS Harry S. Truman and embarked aircraft remain full mission capable.
Details and the cause of the incident are under investigation.

Sue to not being tied down?
I remember the air crewmen putting as many as 20 chains on aircraft in heavy weather.
Was there a prophet on board fleeing from his assignment on shore?
If the ship got hit by a roque wave I could see it possibly taking out an airplane. I was stationed on aircraft carrier many moons ago. The ship got caught in some bad seas. We didn’t lose any aircraft, but the catwalks and antennas near the bow were all mangled...
“We were under cover a bit late (4:50?), but the front and a wall of rain hit at 5:03 pm!”

I’ve never experienced S.FL weather and its timekeeping. I have been in the mountains of NM during monsoon season (typically Aug/Sept) where you can very nearly set your watch to a storm rolling in right around 4pm every day!
Yeah. Exactly.
Now we know that weather imaging and RORSATs look for ship movements...at a minimum.
But they can also do weather - oddly enough
The meteorological conditions should have been known.

Next Top gun sequel: Where my plane??
Stowed for sea in Davey Jones’ locker.
Interesting. Seems like they could recoat it.
The chaplain forgot the George S. Patton Weather Prayer.
Did I miss the climate change story?
My first guess was that they were moving the aircraft and screwed up, but another article says "No one was on board the plane, and no personnel were in the immediate vicinity when the aircraft blew off the ship’s deck". Clearly it was not properly chocked and chained. What a colossal screw up. Heads will roll.
Only the straight white males heads.
Lost during an UNREP? That’s three “mistakes”.
Losing a jet is bad. Losing it due to unexpected weather - bad chains or a failure of chains is bad. But does happen. Scheduling an UNREP (failure to stop an UNREP) while storms bad enough to wash an F18 off of the deck is unexcusable!
My poor old tired eyes read CHINA stamped on that.
I think even with my poor old tired eyes, I see the problem...
