Jon Voight: Americans Should Undergo ‘Proper Testing’ for Gun Ownership

Actor Jon Voight reacted to the deadly Uvalde, Texas, school shooting by suggesting that Americans should undergo “proper testing” for gun ownership.

On May 28, 2022, four days after the heinous attack on Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School, Voight posted a video to Twitter and said:

It’s not about left right, guns no guns, this about brains that are disfunctioning, this is mental. This is not about healthy human beings serving the country with arms to bear or even the right of this constitution for bearing arms. It is a right to use arms with proper purpose to defend one’s safety, we must not allow mental illness to take away our right to bear arms.

Voight then spoke of those killed by the gunman, saying “These innocent souls…are children of God. I must remind us all that God will take home these angels.”

The Oscar-winner then posted a second video, in which he said, “We must identify every individual for their credentials for their mental capacity to bear arms. There should be proper qualifications for gun ownership, and proper testing. One should only own a gun if they’re qualified and schooled.”

Does John mean the newly altered 2nd Amendment?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the "PROPERLY TESTED" people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Like so many other great idears, YUGE pitfalls on just who the deciders are as to "proper". And the deciders of who is and isn't "mental". And how easily will the "proper" and "mental capacity" be changed. Sort of like the definiiton of "vaccine" was changed. Who trusts the assclowns in the current cabal to be honest and trustworthy? You like your gas prices, you can keep your gas prices. To paraphrase the 2nd worst potus ever.

Better idea. Anybody running for any elected office should be fully vetted. A complete background check must be made.

You simply cannot have mental testing as a prerequisite for having guns. It is simply too subjective, and too easily abused. It's a non-starter.

And not to be flip, but this shooter apparently knew exactly how to operate his weapon, so the other criteria Voight discusses wouldn't have helped either.

Properly tested can mean anything....which makes the 2nd amendment meaningless.

These amendments were deliberately very broad....to cover every situation.

You have the right to keep and bear arms....period.

Read it properly and it says I can have it in my car, the barn the house...and bear means on my person.

“We must identify every individual for their credentials for their mental capacity to bear arms. There should be proper qualifications for gun ownership, and proper testing. One should only own a gun if they’re qualified and schooled.”

And who makes that determination?

The arms are protected by the Constitution. The “schools” are not.

A teacher buddy mentioned to me that as soon as a teenager turns eighteen his record gets sealed. The teacher suggested that perhaps it ought to be maintained for several years to see if the teen has “changed.”

As an aside, you often see really, really young blacks flogging drugs openly on street corners. This is because as soon as they hit eighteen, their arrest record is erased. Maybe that ought to change as well.

It’s so embarrassing when Freepers respond to something they don’t like with inane, knuckle dragging comments. I remember when there were some real thinkers on this site.

How about we require firearms safety training in all schools receiving federal funds? To include safe handling of various kinds of firearms in upper classes, say 6th grade and up?

A Republican majority in the next Congress could put this in the education funding bill, if they won’t abolish federal funding of education like they should.

In nearly every case the perpetrator was “on the radar”. Yet government is unable to prevent these crazies from committing crimes (assuming that is actually an objective. One must wonder if it is these days).

In the days of the soviet gulags people were committed for being crazy “for opposing the party” because to do so was a sure sign of insanity.

Care to provide a quote for your accusation?
