SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A group of Democratic congress members, including the House majority leader, on Thursday proposed a binding plebiscite to decide whether Puerto Rico should become a state or gain some sort of independence.
The draft proposal unveiled at an online news conference would commit Congress to accepting Puerto Rico into the United States if voters on the island approve it. But even if the plan were to pass the Democratic-led House, the proposal appears to have little chance in the Senate, where Republicans have long opposed statehood.
Voters also could choose outright independence or independence with free association, whose terms would be defined following negotiations over foreign affairs, U.S. citizenship and use of the U.S. dollar, said Rep. Darren Soto of Florida.
If no majority emerges, a second round of voting would be held between the top two alternatives.
The measure, not yet introduced, follows months of negotiations between federal lawmakers who have long disagreed on what Puerto Rico’s political status should be.

It was Eric Cantor’s vote for PR statehood back in 2012 that made me determined to get rid of him.
Dilute....everything that the Dim’s do is for more votes
Yes, Bush League Republicans last time in 2012 made it so that this time the choice is statehood or independence, no choice for status quo.
Both.
Can Sotomayor be traded here?
I think both are in progress. And frankly, I think we are minority status at this point or very close to
I spoke too soon. Looks like theres strong support for status quo and statehood and independence is an almost nonexistent opinion. But they keep screwing around with the polls so its difficult to tell what is the consensus.
First, we went through this in 2016. PR voted for statehood.
The more conservative party favors statehood and currently holds the Governorship, the Commissionership (non-voting HoR member who aligns with the Republicans) and a plurality in the PR legislature.
Just like last time around, a lot of people here are making assumptions based on nothing but bigotry.
Given the strong RC church in PR it would take relatively little effort to keep PR a red state. This is why the Dems never actually advance PR’s statehood aspirations and keep holding referendums, no matter their promises. Making PR a state would be a bad move for the Dems within one or two election cycles, especially with Hispanics trending more toward the Republicans. Not that Hispanics are a block by any means, but the trend exists across all subgroups.
Yeah, the Mayor of San Juan is a libtard. What Mayor of a major hellhole city is not? But the people of PR should not be automatically presumed to be locked-in Dems.
Puerto Rico has the highest rate of population on SSI, higher than any state.
“Dems running hard ahead of the midterms.”
I was not aware that this was the #1 pressing issue facing the USA.
I think I’d be okay with PR as a state if the rest of california can secede from sanfran/sacramento/la
I agree.
Statehood - NO!
Independence - YES!
Cut them loose and let them go their own way.
Why are we only considering areas that would only benefit one party?
You don’t really need an answer to that do you?
I have been expecting this big push for the last 12 years.
We’ll see what happens this time.
What do I find interesting?
A country like the Dominican Republic. I’m sure those folks have their problems, but…..
They know tourism brings in the $$$$. So they cater to that. They have expats buying properties and spending money. They’re building a wall to keep out the Haitians as it’s bad for business. Tropical paradise and they’ve figured out how to capitalize on it.
The Haitians and PRs…..Nope.
Earthquakes hit that island, seems like it’s only Haiti that is devastated. Why not it’s neighbor to the east?
Haiti could be taking I. Tourist dollars too, if they weren’t savages. But nope.
Wife’s mom was from Morovis and she still has family there. Have been all over the island and know the islands horrible politics pretty well. I say NO to statehood - people may be friendly but too many love patronage as well as openly embracing every COVID theater protocol with gusto.
Set PR free, and don’t be surprised to find a Chinese naval base in the Caribbean. LOL, maybe they’ll have a new Queen, her royal highness AOC. (Hmmmmm? it could be worth it after all?)
WRONG - most New Progressive Party (the statehood party) affiliate with the the Democrats, including the current Governor Pierluisi - PR has only elected two GOP-affiliated governors since elections began in the 1940s - Ferre and Fortuno.
Most “Catholic” states are Dem - where do you get the idea that a people who are nominally Romanist would be “conservative” - sounds like a Bush League assumption to me. ;)
I would support a binding vote on PR independence. Save our Congress from future shoot ups.
