WRONG - most New Progressive Party (the statehood party) affiliate with the the Democrats, including the current Governor Pierluisi - PR has only elected two GOP-affiliated governors since elections began in the 1940s - Ferre and Fortuno.
NPP is, in fact, the more conservative party in spite of the name.
They do have people that identify with either party, so pay attention to the affiliation claimed by the individual.
Gonzales, the current Resident Commissioner, is NPP *and* Republican. Pierluisi was Fortuno’s running mate (both NPP) a couple of terms ago, IIRC, yet one is an R and one is a D.
In any case, the R party makes *zero* effort to win PR since they a) are nominally averse to the identity politics that the Ds depend on, and b) largely have not pursued the Hispanic vote. I wonder how they would do if they *tried*!
