‘Cash for Clunkers’ can cut gas prices, climate change — and Putin’s income

As evidence of Russian atrocities in Ukraine mounts, the U.S. is once again grappling with our dependence on foreign oil. Although we produce more than we consume, we imported about 670,000 barrels per day from Russia last year — more than we imported from Saudi Arabia. At recent prices of $100 per barrel, that’s nearly $25 billion that fed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine. The U.S. ban on Russian oil helps, but is small compared to total Russian exports.

So, how can we cut oil consumption and energy costs? President Biden wants electric vehicles (EVs) to comprise half of all new car sales by 2030 and proposed higher incentives to do so. But selling more EVs does little to reduce the existing fleet of internal combustion engine light-duty vehicles (cars, SUVs and pickup trucks). Think of the existing combustion vehicle fleet as a huge bathtub. The tub is filled by sales of new combustion vehicles and drained when old ones are scrapped. The flow of new combustion vehicles into the tub falls when people choose EVs. But the 250 million combustion vehicles in the tub today would continue to run, propping up oil demand and prices, funding war — and fueling climate change, since they generate nearly 17 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. And those vehicles last a long time: even if EVs suddenly became 100 percent of new vehicle sales from today on it would be about 20 years before the fleet of all light duty vehicles on the road became 90 percent electric. The best way to empty a tub is to open the drain. Policies that accelerate vehicle retirement can do so.

In Lesko Brandon’s world, cash for clunkers will help shrink the federal deficit.

I’m not giving up my 57 Bel Air, 67 Camaro or 48 Chevy truck, they will be on the road for centuries into the future.

I’ll never give mine up either running or not.

At least I understand how they work and it doesn’t take a modern day maintenance facility and factory/ dealer training.

Cash for Clunkers.

Give people who are in a position to buy a new car thousands of dollars to buy a little one and trade in a big one. So they trade in their pickup for a Prius, make a few grand on the deal, and trade in their old Prius for a new pickup.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...the used pickup that had 60,000 good miles left in it gets destroyed by the Gobblement, because they’re so much smarter than us regular idiots, and the person making half of what the first people make have one less vehicle to choose from to get to work in. That means the price of the car they buy goes...anyone? The price of that vehicle goes...up or down...anyone? ...Buehler?

And these damned fools get away with telling people they care so damn much about The Little Guy who’s just trying to make ends meet....

It makes me throw up.

Do these idiots actually believe themselves?

Yes, they do.

(I know, it was rhetorical.)

It was about the same for my Subaru! I told him he was too late, I already bought my leased vehicle a year early before interest rates went to the moon.

A bathtub analogy.

From writers who probably never had the analogy section on their SATs.

next go all wind solar

Wind (e..g. TX up through the Great Plains) and solar (e.g. sunny areas) is pretty cheap. Only one catch: it is worth less, much less. If you want reliable power then you will pay much more as the cost of dispatchable power will increase.

They come up with repeat gibberish daily. I expect to hear about ‘deficit hawks” any day. That’s another worthless term the media hauls out and applies to Democrats during crazed spending periods. Used a lot under Clinton.

I plan to hold on to my 4 year old Ford Transit Connect that gets 28 mpg highway, which is most of what I drive, for a long time, especialy since I only drive about 4000 miles a year. If I ever get an electric I will put solar on the roof to lower the cost of fueling the car.

Meanwhile, I recently discovered it is true that keeping your tires properly inflated saves money. My tires had gone quite soft (my partner usually takes care of air) and I was surprised that my gas use increased by about 25% on a long drive alone. He took care of my air pressure when I returned, and my gas use went back to normal. I am not sure that driving at 50 mph really saves gas over driving at 60 mph in mostly flat land. My van really seems to want to go 60, in fact it is quite happy to creep to higher speeds if I am not careful, yet I don’t notice much change in gas use. I am following the advice about coasting to a stop at highway lights, and accelerating at an even pace. Any other suggestions appreciated.

I think it is unlikely there will be a cash for klunkers program any time soon. First we will need to solve the supply chain issues so manufacturers can start building the more efficient electric vehicles. Also a lot more electric pumps need to be made publicly available before people in greater numbers will buy electric vehicles. I heard about a low cost electric, but it only drove about 100 miles on a charge, I regularly take a 175 trip and return. There is only one electric charging station I have seen. It is at a Royal Farms in an afluent resort town, at the 75 mile point on the trip. So that car idea was a bust.

I’ve got a 14 transit connect. Make sure you change the ATF every 30-40k. Do not let Ford Lie to you.

In the van, Driving 50 vs 60 does not save fuel, But in a bigger truck(17k weight) It does make a noticeable difference.

Tire pressure is about optimizing for your standard laden weight, and adjusting as you change that.
Most people will not adjust tire pressure for long trips.

electric vehicles as a plug in, are not sustainable. The Grid cannot Handle it. Only thing that makes viable sense is Hydrogen fuel cells, which are electric in nature.

I am glad we bought a shrimpy Honda used in May 2020. A 2016 model with 4000 miles on it. We get 29.3 MPG for city driving so we’re all set.

It’s the food prices that bother me. Jumping every week. With diesel fuel at $5.60 ++++ what do you expect? Blame the eco-Nazis. Diesel should normally be one dollar cheaper than gasoline.

Ford Transit has a long bloodline going back to Europe. The first time I saw one was in Israel in 1995. I was in one with family getting driven around for touristy things. The Transit name stuck with me. But you never saw “Transit” here until 2010 or so.

Transit = Ford European derived.
