Twitter abuse victims fear Musk’s plans, but may not quit
The Associated Press ^ | April 27, 2022 | By JOSH FUNK

Perhaps no group of people is more alarmed about Elon Musk’s plan to make Twitter a free speech free-for-all than those most likely to be targeted for harassment: women, racial minorities and other marginalized groups.

They fear that a more hands-off approach to policing the platform will embolden purveyors of hate speech, bullying and disinformation to ratchet up their bad behavior — a possibility Musk has done little to dispel.

Yet even those who have faced extreme harassment on Twitter say they are unlikely to quit the platform. Despite the negative psychological toll, they still place a high value on Twitter as a place to express their views and engage with others.

That could help explain why Musk shows little concern for the underbelly of unfettered free speech, although advertisers - who account for 90% of Twitter’s revenue - may not feel the same way.

While polls show all types of people are susceptible to online harassment, extensive research has shown that women and people of color are far more likely to be targeted. That’s also true for people with disabilities, people who belong to religious minorities and members of the LGBTQ community.

Michael Kleinman, who has studied online harassment for Amnesty International, said if Twitter allows more hateful and abusive speech, marginalized people who get attacked are likely to express themselves less.

"Twitter abuse victims fear Musk’s plans, but may not quit"

If you stay, you'll be condoning that "abuse." Do yourselves a favor, and just go ahead and quit already. Better yet, if you're not yet in Canada, I suggest you might want to move there pronto.

“…those most likely to be targeted for harassment: women, racial minorities and other marginalized groups.”

Stop it. No one is harassed more today than white men.

If they don’t like it, they should just go build their own platform. Right?

What many people might not realize is that the left is crying “abuse” for legal reasons more than anything else. Section 230 shields these internet companies from liability for censorship, but only for specified reasons, which include:

“obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable”

Obviously, for most political speech the left wants to ban they cannot make the case that it is lewd or lascivious, or excessively violent. So the only excuses left for them to ban speech and retain their exemption from liability is for “harassment” or the nebulous “otherwise objectionable”, which is usually interpreted as “failing to meet community standards”, which are conveniently determined by the leftist censors running the company. That’s why they always cry “abuse” or “harassment”, because those are magic words, legally, to allow the left to censor speech without incurring legal liability.

A few years back, I was on Twitter for a little while. One of those I started following was the Pope. He would come out with a scripture of the day. Was it actually hime doing it? Probably not - one of his flunkies. However, the responses to his scripture of the day - it seemed like the demon that possessed the little girl in The Exorcist movie continually responded to the Pope’s posting with such vile language it would make a sailor blush. Twitter at the time felt that was okay and that those resppnses did not violate their hateful speech criteria. I soon dropped off Twitter after seeing those postings.

If musk doesn’t get rid of the employee nay-sayers, they will make his life with Twitter miserable. Weed them out!!!

Abuse victims? How about Kyle Rittenhouse? Donald Trump? People who owned businesses burned down by BLM and Antifa? Employees who want to earn a living without taking a dangerous gene therapy? Scientists who call out the AGW hoax? The list of victims is long....the ones they want to protect are the perpetrators.

Twitter abuse victims - marginalized groups

Marginalized groups on twitter would include white people, conservatives, nationalists, Christians and masculine men. Most of them have already been banned.
