Germany willing to become guarantor state for Ukraine peace

Germany is willing to become a “guarantor state” for a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, a government spokesman said on Wednesday.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the issue in their recent phone calls, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit told a news conference in Berlin.

“Germany, like several other countries, is of course ready to act as a security guarantor for Ukraine,” he stressed, but added that the matter could be subject to further deliberations as many details were still not clear.

During peace negotiations in Istanbul on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials signaled readiness to negotiate a “neutral status,” but demanded security guarantees for their country.

Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia told reporters that they are seeking an international agreement, where countries including Turkiye, Germany, Canada, Italy, Poland and Israel serve as the guarantor states.

“Germany, like several other countries, is of course ready to act as a security guarantor for Ukraine,”

And what will Germany do if Ukraine's security is breached? Import a few thousand more Muslims or threaten to send Putin some weinerschnitzel?

LOL, they are among the weakest nations in Europe. And last time they went to Ukraine they were mass murderers. And there is a sizeable nazi element there today. Doucheland should stay out of it.

Hmmmm, they luze all the oil- and gas-bearing regions to the invader. But they gain a “guarantor” or two.

They THOUGHT they HAD a guarantor when they signed the Budapest Memorandum with Russia and USA as signers. But we betrayed them after Russia VIOLATED the agreement & invaded twice.

So what will they require of a guarantor state? How about simply boots on the ground, tens of thousands of them? And a patrolled region with those guarantor state soldiers in the buffer zone between the Ukraine and Russia?

Here’s how I look at it: If the Ukes sign another agreement, they are no longer in an existential war. That means they no longer have the demonstrated right to pursue nukes [unless they specifically say otherwise in this new agreement].

Once they are no longer in an existential war, restoring their old borders would entail INVADING back into the old Ukraine/New Republics, forcing the Ukes to be the aggressors. But if they refuse to sign the agreement, just keep things in a perpetual state of war like the Nork/SouKoreans then they can build their own nukes in the future like the Norks appear to be doing.

The Ukes do not have a lot of choices. I’ll bet that right about now they regret not having pursued NATO membership as distinctly as the Estonians did.

Wasted money. They are psychologically and politically incapable of combat operations anymore. Most of that money will be wasted.

They need to establish patrolled corridors along the Russian borders where the guarantors are the primary defense force. If Russia invades again, they have to go through the Germans or Poles or Irish or whomever to get to the Ukes, triggering an international response.

Reich nostalgia is an odd thing some weaker types seem to indulge in for whatever reason.

Of those "guarantor states", Turkey is the one that has the military to actually support Ukraine. And Erdogan still has dreams of a resurrected Ottoman Empire.

“Europe cannot survive without Russian supplies”

This is silly. Europe can afford to replace or substitute anything Russia provides. The difference in GDP is immense - $15.2 Trillion vs 1.5 Trillion.

Not oil. Oil is an easily substitutable commodity. Lots of sellers, lots of buyers, almost all of them trading worldwide across the ocean blue.
You just whistle up a tanker bringing oil from somewhere else.
The guy you are boycotting will just sell to someone else. Net-net its a wash.

What you probably mean is natural gas. That is more like hooking up a utility service. Even so, for the most part Nat Gas is substitutable without too much effort. Most is used for electricity generation and there are several ways of producing electricity, some of which Germany has or was planning to mothball, like Nuke and Coal plants.

What they are very likely to get is lots of money for their defense establishment. Money is very easy and goes very far in Ukraine. The Ukes should easily be able to maintain a much bigger and better active and reserve military, very quickly.

Russia has no option, should it try to threaten Ukraine again, but to do it with a reformed conscript army, as their active force won’t have the numbers (as we see today). Add to that military reform will require massive social reforms in Russia.

Like the thread points out, oil AND natgas. Yes oil. Yes Natural gas. Russia wasn’t even interested in the region until that stuff was discovered, and then Russia invaded within 2 years of its discovery.

It sounds like you believe all this stuff about Russia luzing so many men, basically luzing this war. I doubt it. The Ukes wouldn’t need a guarantor if such was the case.

They are 25% of EU GDP...that makes them the heavyweight along with Britain they are 38% and with France thrown in....well it is the EU pretty much

Nobody in the world can “make” Russia do diddly militarily given they have apocalypse level nukes which we can’t thwart them all and sure couldn’t iron dome Europe

But we seem intent on effing it all up....US and the nato and the EU in tandem

Hattip Nigel Farage (2014)...... prescient as hell his warnings then about goading Putin

Putin was actually warts and all somewhat on board in the war on terror

Our misguided neocon Syrian adventures harmed that more than the Iraq invasion did

His opinion on our afghan nation building was likely ...good luck..idiots.....the Hindu Kush takes a toll on early 19th century Anglo Indian forces, 1980s Russian armies or the might of US military forces for twenty years ....

This union of progressives, neocons and cold warriors 2.0 and the woke machine fueling it all will be the death of the west if they are not stopped

Your comment was about Germany needing oil, not Russian incentives to invade.
