Utah GOP lurches to the right at Davis County convention

Donald Trump's presidency and subsequent loss to President Joe Biden, combined with growing anger from two years of Covid restrictions, has oriented the party to such a degree that it's hard to believe Sen. Mitt Romney was the GOP presidential nominee just ten years ago.

That hard lurch to the right-wing of the party cost longtime state Rep. Steve Handy of Layton his seat in the legislature on Saturday. One of the state's more moderate Republicans, Handy, was defeated by newcomer Trevor Lee, who has embraced several right-wing issues during his campaign.

On his campaign website, Lee says he favors election audits and wants to pass "heartbeat" legislation, which bans abortions once a heartbeat is detected. Lee also says he favors a ban on "anyone with male DNA from competing on Women's (sic) sports teams."

Handy was one of several Republicans who flipped their vote to help override Gov. Spencer Cox's veto of a bill banning transgender athletes. Although the vote switch wasn't enough to sway Davis County delegates to support the longtime lawmaker. Lee is now unopposed in HD16.

The startling turn to the right on Saturday was evident throughout Saturday's convention, focusing on culture war issues over more traditional bread and butter Republican topics.

The Precinct Strategy is working.

Take the GOP over from the bottom up and inside out.

Here’s a hint: if it doesn’t lurch to the right, they are demoncraps.

Do they endorse this rag? I thought the Deseret News had closer connections to the church.

Rag is too kind of a word to describe the tribune. It was an anti-Mormon tract from its inception. They call themselves “independent” but that is typical of their BS. They have always been contrarians to anything right of center. Their owners have been hard-left communists for over 100 years who cheat on their taxes, while promoting higher taxes for everyone else.

Assuming that Trump is reelected, and with a hearty, more conservative House and Senate, he will have a Yuuge number of jobs in front of him.

I think one of his priority jobs will be to shepherd the Balanced Budget Amendment through congress. This will both accomplish much of his agenda, and prevent his changes from being changed back.

From that point, he needs to purge the government in earnest. The Pentagon alone needs to be culled like it was after the Civil War or World War I. Then rebuilt from scratch. Likewise, the 17 Agencies of the Intelligence Community need to be substantially purged and rebuilt.

Slash the Tax Code until it is easy enough for an intelligent person to understand. A Herculean task.

I certainly believe that. I read both papers for the year we lived in SLC.

Lee also says he favors a ban on "anyone with male DNA from competing on Women's (sic) sports teams."

Why the "sic"? It's usually used in connection with misspellings or bad grammar, to make the speaker look stupid. But nothing's wrong here.

This isn’t the result of waiting.

What’s happening in various locations in the country is that people are taking action, and moving at the local level to either get rid of the RINO’s, or finally start pushing from the right. There’s lots of activity surrounding school board elections and local city council races, but the real push, IMHO, needs to be at the GOP county committee level. There have always been good crunchy conservatives at that level, but never really a majority. It was always the local chamber of commerce “pragmatists” who would give that crucial early support to establishment types who could be relied upon to not “get too crazy”.

The danger now is the same as during the Tea Party movement. People were angry then, too, and got involved, and then the “good” candidates got co-opted. This time around, the only hope is that enough people will stay angry enough to maintain their involvement after a few of these wins and keep pushing pushing pushing from the “right”.

The Tea Party didn't have someone like Trump to not only endorse candidates but also to hold their feet to the fire if they became sell-outs. And I think it is safe to say that after the RINO betrayal over the 2020 Steal, the base is more furious than ever. The level of anger towards RINOs in 2010 is nothing like it is today.

Agreed that people are more motivated and ticked off than they were ten years ago, and there are definite signs of people taking political action, particularly with local politics, that would simply not have even been on the radar before.

And I’ve personally observed that a group of committed and orgainzed people can effect positive changes — just look at all of the states passing Constitutional Carry over the past few years. The problem remains that conservatives, right-populists and small l libertarians just don’t like politics the way that the lefty progressives do. We would much rather spend our time with our families, our jobs, our churches, and our various private enterprises. The progressive left loves government, loves the exercise of power for its own sake.

It is surely a reason for optimism that Trump is out there fully engaged with these midterm races, giving his signature rallies and actively endorsing candidates. That’s a huge advantage that we have never had before. Should be interesting in any case.
