Federal panel narrows list of recommended names to 87; report due to Congress by Oct. 1
Dwight D. Eisenhower, George C. Marshall, Colin Powell and Harriet Tubman are among 87 candidates who have made the cut for the renaming of nine military installations that honor Confederate figures, including Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in Georgia.
The federal Naming Commission announced this week it had narrowed its list of recommendations from the more than 34,000 it had received from the public. It stopped soliciting ideas online Dec. 1 and is preparing to submit its final recommendations to Congress by Oct. 1.
Congress created the commission amid renewed protests for racial justice after the violent deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Ahmaud Arbery in southeast Georgia. The Pentagon is expected to act on the commission’s recommendations by 2024.
America’s military bases, the Naming Commission said on its website, should “appropriately reflect the courage, values and sacrifices of our diverse military men and women, with consideration given to the local or regional significance of names and their potential to inspire and motivate our service members.”

The navy already has a ship named for it courtesy of senator dianne frankenswine.
At some point, as in the case of Ft Benning, the name of the place takes on a life and identity of its own. While most Americans have no idea of who Benning was; I would suggest that a vast majority of people know WHAT it is—and what it as been since WWII.
My parents were married there...and they were stationed there a couple of times. Their paperwork states Fort Benning...not Jeff Davis, or Hate Black folks....
...no chance, if my memory serves me...there is a United States Naval Ship (USNS, NOT “U.S.S.” - which would identify a commissioned warship...) already named after Harvey Milk....probably flies the rainbow flag at its peak, not the “Old Glory” U.S. flag..... jus’ sayin’ .......

I don't give a rats ass about any other country. I do care about everyday Americans.
A clear indication that our military is actually used for its constitutional intension and a way for our loser military leadership regain a little of their manhood is to fight and win the war on our border. Kill the cartels. Repeal the illegal invaders. Be brutal. It will save American lives. Those are the lives that matter.
I would have deserted instead.
I got a heckovan idea! Why not just leave them as they are. What is the point of renaming these bases other than to maybe remove a bad taste from someone’s mouth who happened to be stationed there at one time? By leaving them alone at least people will be familiar with their location. I was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB once, & while the bad taste has still not left my mouth, at least I will remember where it is.
