Trump wasn’t going to try to bring Ukraine into NATO, so Putin wouldn’t have felt threatened and wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine. He also recognized that not buying Putin’s oil would have put the Russian leader on a short fiscal leash and discouraged aggression by Putin.
