Putin's invasion grinds to a halt: Kyiv claims to have destroyed dozens of Russian helicopters overnight, retaken a city, and killed 11,000 troops while Russians have captured no significant territory sparking hopes Ukraine could win the war

Russia's invasion of Ukraine appears to have ground to a halt with no significant territory captured despite a weekend of heavy fighting, with Kyiv's men claiming to have taken out dozens of helicopters and recaptured a city this morning - sparking hopes that the unlikeliest of victories may be on the cards.

Putin's men renewed their bombardments on Mariupol, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv this morning as his forces also tried to surround Kyiv in preparation for an assault, but have not significantly advanced their frontline since the city of Kherson and nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia were captured last week.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian armed forces claimed to have destroyed up to 30 Russian helicopters that had been moved to Chornobaivka airport, near Kherson, overnight and to have retaken the city of Chuhuiv, near Kharkiv, killing two Russian commanders - Lt. Col. Dmitry Safronov, and Lt Col. Denis Glebov - in the process.

Russia also tacitly acknowledged the loss of two other commanders - Colonel Konstantin Zizevsky and Lieutenant Colonel Denis Glebov - whose funerals were held in Russia at the weekend.

Video also emerged which appeared to show Ukrainian defence forces based in Odessa, the country's largest port, exchanging fire with ships overnight - one of which suffers a hit. Ukraine's ministry of defence has since claimed the vessel was destroyed.

-snip-

US intelligence believes Russia has committed 95 per cent of the invasion force it had assembled on Ukraine's border to the fight, meaning significant reinforcements to push its attacks forward are unlikely to come soon - and could simply run into many of the same logistical problems that plagued the early assault.

It wasn’t the Russians releasing “footage from the front” which turned out to be — literally — old video game clips.

A little problem of credibility, akin to “Circle Back” Peppermint Psaki.

It would take a month to call up a serious number of reserves and the damage to the economy would be great. Also, the conscripts serve only a year and I don’t know if there are yearly reserve training recalls. Many of these reservists would likely need substantial retraining.

The Chinese dont need to invade Taiwan. They can just blockade it by threatening commercial shipping and firing a few shots “across their bows”. Nothing is going in or out of Taiwan after that, unless the US organizes a “Malta convoy” and escorts it with the 7th Fleet. That will then be a game of chicken as to whether the US really wants to risk war with China, and vice versa.

Taiwan will fall, or not, to a struggle in the sea and sky. If China gains control of that, in battle or if the US just cedes it, Taiwan will fall. It cant survive a blockade.

Russia will default on their sovereign debt on March 16th and Putin needs to do a deal before then.

Putin is not winning.

Russia FM Lavrov: We have information that US built two biological warfare labs in #Kiev & #Odessa. They have developed pathogens in those labs in #Ukraine️

https://twitter.com/iraqliveupdate/status/1500593009620099074?s=21

Put this into perspective.

"Colon" Powell justified going into Iraq on the basis of WMDs (chemical weapons).

Given what we know now about COVID-19 and its illegal funding by Dasazk and Fauci, and its source in the Wuhan labs, why is the presence of US-funded biolabs in the Ukraine not a legitimate causus belli itself?

I think you are right! Sadly, I think Russia may be “dragging this out”, which just extends the violence and killing, as his part of the bargain.

There is a lot of hay to be made in this death and destruction and by all the wrong people.

Ukrainians are fighting bravely, but they are seriously outgunned.

True, but wars are fought, not calculated. There are many examples of smaller forces defeating a larger invading force. That said, I have no idea what will happen, and anyone who says he does is either a fool or a liar. Only time will tell.

there are going to be a lot of weapons left over when this is done. I wonder where they will end up?

DPR/LPR stockpiles for starters...where else?

That is a pretty good defense strategy.

I think Japan and South Korea also need to nuke up.

The Chinese push to build and field silos with ready to launch systems is one of the most impressive buildups anywhere.

240-400 nuclear weapons in total with about 150 ready to launch in 2019, now over 500 ready to launch in 2022. The aim to have 2000 by 2030.

Currently, we have 5600 nuclear warheads with around 1800 in ready to launch systems.

Russia possesses approximately 6,000 nuclear warheads as of 2022—the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world. Russia only has 1,625 nuclear weapons in so-called “deployed” status. As of February 26, 2022, Russian President has ordered his nuclear forces onto a higher deployment status, so the totality of these “deployed” weapons is probably now higher.

This. You see maps usually shaded red of "Russian controlled areas." Given the size of the country, all Russia controls are some roads and a few towns. 200K troops is nothing for a country the size of Ukraine if there's determined resistance.

I also see some slow movement on Russia's demands. First off, no mention of Ukraine disappearing. They now want a neutrality guarantee and recognition of the annexation of Crimea and the "republics" in Donetsk. Notably absent is any claim about EU membership, although Putin may see that as not-neutral.

Someone should propose a treaty like the Austrian neutrality treaty, with it's borders guaranteed and the proviso that Ukraine can be very well armed but with no foreign troops except trainers. I would propose the US make this proposal as a guarantor along with withdrawal of Russian forces from Belarus, and restoration of INF and Conventional Forces in Europe treaties.

Well, to be sure, those blond Ukrainian refugees happen to be women and kids only, dudes staying to fight, whereas the effeminate Afghan “men” would run away pants down, dropping weapons and smashing women trying to board the C17.

“The pictures and the video I’m seeing do not align with all of the doom and gloom headlines for Russian prospects.
It appears to me that the ukrainians are getting their asses kicked while Moscow looks like the safest city in America by comparison.”

That is my read as well.

We will know a lot more in the next week or so...

The place to watch is the primary Ukranian force in eastern Ukraine.

Can they survive while being surrounded?

That will tell the tale.

Nukes for Taiwan is a good idea, but what Taiwan really needs is an air force, air defense system, and a navy that can take on the Chinese. That all is going to be vastly expensive.

Unless Taiwan say it will start nuking if China blockades it.

Invasion is the least of their worries.

Much of Chinas military is designed off of Russia’s as is most of the 3rd world. Im betting they are in some cellar somewhere redesigning or looking for another arms supplier. Russias armor is crap. Those vehicles that are non-tracked have serious tire malfunctions due to importation of Chinese products, their Air Force is being clobbered by shoulder fired SAMs, and the conscripts won’t fight.

To make matters worse, Russia has not heeded history regarding the time of year to invade. Like Hitler they have become bogged down in mud. Their wheeled vehicles are too heavy to go off road and are easy targets of ground forces using the javelin.

Most of all, Putin is a madman. He has the ability to order nuke strikes for any reason his panties are wadded up.

Furnish Ukrainian artillery with guided shells and Russia is in big trouble.

This will be a drone and guided shell war. I think even robots involved, the first skynet style war with Musk providing sat coverage.

All texting of Russian troops is intercepted. Their radios suck so bad.

I don’t think the ChiComs will ever have to fight for Taiwan.

They can simply, over the years, buy it, little by little.

They “fight” a long game, and if they have to battle over Taiwan, that will mean too much to lose with shipping loses, customer loses to their massive exports, as well as the unknowns in directly confronting the combined East Asian/Australian/American militaries (their stuff gets blown up/sunk/destroyed, men killed).

Why risk all of that when you can slowly take over economically until you own everyone?

Nah. Any war or conflict is pregnant with a new reality. I think this warKs purpose will see Russia defeated by a Western skynet style force without identifiable nation of origin… but its own logo.

What’s that saying, if you owe the bank $100 and don’t have it, you’re screwed, but if you owe the bank $1 billion and don’t have it, the bank is screwed?

Japan, S. Korea and Taiwan have all the tech prowess to build nuclear weapons in a matter of weeks.

The difficulty is in refining or acquiring sufficient fissionable weapons-grade uranium or plutonium in absolute secrecy.

All 3 nations have nuclear power plants, but it would have taken years of stealthy diversion to obtain sufficient material.
