The feature is being added to new cars as “inebriated driving controls”. You have to blow into the breathalizer to drive your car or it won’t start and authorities are called if you are over the limit. Same system could be used for other remote purposes if you become an enemy of the state.
If WWIII can save only one life...
“Tesla sales would go to zero and his stock tank overnight.”
Yeah that was my thought. This is such a bad idea.
We already have Tesla deactivating certain features in used cars that the first owner paid for and then asking the new owner to pay up to have the features restored.
If they deactivate the cars in Russia, what are the chances those owners will eventually have to pay ransom to Tesla to get their car working again?
i’m afraid we’re there.
Ford and tesla for sure, GM and FCA likely, Have your car recording all the data, such as speeds, GPs destinations, radio stations you listen to, and phone home with it.
I despise it and if, big friggin’ if, I buy a new car, I will locate the cellular module and remove it.
91 YJ ftw.
The real motives of these Twitter users are to hurt Musk and not Russia.
Musk has been revealing his true conservative values and the Leftist hate him for it.
That and he won’t give everyone a free car.
Hate to tell you but due to the tsunami of product liability lawsuits, pretty much *every* car since about 2000 includes a form of data recorder in the ECU or elsewhere in the car. They do not necessarily phone home, but they record at least the last 30 seconds worth of critical OBD2 parameters before airbag deployment or before the system detects a crash. This was due to all the people claiming that their car’s brakes went out causing a crash, etc. The manufacturer can have the module pulled and read the data back.
Also, FYI, you’re going to have to remove a lot more than just ‘the cellular module’ especially as more and more cars incorporate that in unified control modules.
“If they haven’t already built that feature into gasoline cars, they will shortly”
Pretty sure my gas Hyundai has that feature and its a three year old car. I know for sure if my car is stolen you can notify Hyundai’s Blue link service and they can locate where the car is and remotely limit the speed to 20 mile per hour. I don’t see why they couldn’t disable it all together.
I have mixed feeling about the data recorder.
A friend got in a nasty accident involving two other cars, one was the car that caused the accident. That guy forced my friend into the oncoming lane and hit another car. The driver who caused it, naturally, lied and blamed my friend, and cops believed him.
My friend engaged the services of a forensics investigator who got the readout from his car, and proved in court that my friend wasn’t the cause. All charges were dropped.
Without the data recorder, he would have been royally screwed.
Don’t kid yourself. He’d sell plenty of cars to morons all over the U.S. if it came with an offer of a free COVID booster with every regular maintenance visit.
Will these same people give up all their ChiCom crap...?
(crickets)
It certainly would signal to the world (and potential customers) that his company (he) is willing to participate in mob thought control, censorship and punishment. I know I’d never consider buying one if he ever did that.
I wonder if the world is watching close and are going to boycott us the next time our government invades another sovereign nation?
Indeed. It’s not like gas cars are devoid of electronics these days. To get something really analog one would have to go back quite a ways in terms of car years.
Doesn’t ONSTAR require a subscription after the first install?
This is what happens when leftist extremists gain power
Please turn off twitter users. Start there. Then all comments on the internet. Mine included.
Some people could make a lot of money retrofitting these cars.
Also retrofitting cell phones
I think part of it is always there. Like 911
It would be business suicide for Tesla. Who wants a car that in the morning when you’d really like it to turn over, has just served you with divorce papers?
