A fire has been seen at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine after tanks opened fire with heavy weapons at the facility, footage in the early hours of Friday morning showed.
A live feed from the Zaporizhzhia station showed flames at the site in the east of country, having earlier showed tanks firing at buildings - sparking fears of a radiation disaster in the nation currently being invaded by Russian forces.
Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar, confirmed the blaze in an online post. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest of its kind in Europe.
'As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,' Orlov said on his Telegram channel, citing what he called a threat to world security.
Earlier, Ukrainian authorities reported Russian troops were stepping up efforts to seize the plant and had entered the town with tanks.
The shocking footage came after Ukrainian civilians defied Russian troops for a second day running in a bid to protect the nuclear plant. They were shown setting up make-shift road blocks in an attempt to block the road to the facility.
Both the Ukrainian state atomic energy company and Orlov said troops were nearing Zaporizhzhia. Officials said loud shots were heard in the city late Thursday.
'Many young men in athletic clothes and armed with Kalashnikov have come into the city. They are breaking down door and trying to get into the apartments of local residents,' the statement from Energoatom said.

The problem is “selective compassion”.
There is a lot of war and suffering and has been since homo sapiens walked out of the caves—the issue is what folks choose to get concerned about and what they don’t.
If the mass media drives your “compassion” then you are a sucker for propaganda.
**If the intent was to cut off power, take out the lines leading out from the plant.**
If you wanted to control a power plant, would you knock down power lines that may take a week or more to repair (especially if more than one wire tower is destroyed) or simply gain control of the switch boxes?
I would try the latter first.

Your own bias is blinding you. I’ve been watching this whole thing on and off for over 40 years.
In the case of the “gloating”, at least from the Ukes it’s not really what most people would think is gloating. It’s the anger of those who feel stabbed in the back by “brothers” (not really, but we’d have to do some serious & lengthy history to unwind that.) Also let down by the West they’d pinned their hopes on, and left with “I’m gonna die, but I’m taking some of you bastards with me”. It is more spunk than gloating.
Separately, I’ve already expressed my dismay about what this will do to the Russian people. That includes thousands of families whose sons (mostly) will never see home again, and many of those sons have died in horrible ways. But, that goes for BOTH sides, and I must also consider the civilians killed, a country wrecked, and what look to be millions of refugees, and even hardships globally. The only “good” of dead Russian soldiers is the faint hope that Putin has some twinge of humanity left in him and will stop this madness. Because if one understands what I’ve called the great currents of history, there are now only 3 choices: Putin stops his attack (unlikely); or he is stopped and Russia as an aggressive power is ended (will take time and pain); or there is in the future a much greater war than any we have ever seen and quite possibly we lose civilization itself. There are multiple roads for that last choice, but all conclude similarly. Best guess is within 50 years, but it could be much sooner.
It’s no wonder Elon wants to try to get a few of us off this rock. I’m not sure he has the time.
All of the civilian casualties in Ukraine could have been avoided if the Russians did not invade. How difficult is that?
Your argument is the same as saying injuries are difficult to avoid when you decide to go into your neighbor's house and start hitting them, as if that would absolve you of the responsibility for injuring your neighbors.
Media, mass or otherwise does not drive my compassion. My compassion comes from my humanity and religion, not political polls, or whether or not George Soros happens to like some nation, and I have compassion for victims, not perpetrators.

If you think that the Russians are the innocent party you are either hard at work in St. Petersburg or you really have no clue. Why are the Russians invading another nation in the first place?
Given the chance of things going awry by trying to do a heavy assault at the plant, I’d find ways to interrupt the lines at a distance. Perhaps “interrupt” is a better wording than “take out”.
Now, if those control boxes can be taken control of (not “taken out”) by a light assault, that’s a different matter. Which I noted. Tanks are not a “light assault”, in my book.

Kosovo wasn't US territory. It's independance was assured by US arms, including months of bombardment of Belgrade.
If Kosovo's independance can be assured by the might and valor of the US, why can't Russia step in to help Russophones literally on its border?

Everything I'm seeing from several sources indicate that not only was the plant operational it was producing a large percentage of Ukraine's electricity.

I suspect that Ukraine’s acquisition of Turkish drones and their overall improvements in military capability led Putin to conclude he faced a reversal in Donbas, and considerable difficulty, if not worse, in Crimea. All that with increasing chances the desire of most Ukrainians to join the EU* would finally be realized... Putin’s oft expressed desire to restore Russian glory and dominance would not be realized in his lifetime. In fact, given the proximity of Ukraine in more ways than just a border, the “cancer” of the West would likely grow in Russia. THAT, he and his corrupt pals could never countenance. So, flush with petro dollars and the confidence of observing a weak minded West that was actually bolstering him with every decision, he decided this was the time to attack. He probably figured the Ukes would fold in a few days at most.
Aside from the obvious and generally laughably clumsy trolls, it is important to note we have a large group here who are suicidally isolationist (it’s not 1823 any more, guys ‘n gals), and another large group has so much hatred of the EU and globalization that they are blind to the fact that to the majority in Ukraine (and some other Eastern European countries), the EU quite rationally is a heck of a lot better choice than being a vassal state of Russia.

I have very little understanding of how a power plant reacts to the sudden stop of electrical usage.
I also have little understanding of how to assault a powerplant to get control of it. But I would certainly want to clear out resistance in the area, starting with any buildings (hideouts) potentially used by the opposing force, that are not integral to the plant operation.
Cutting the wires doesn’t remove the hidden opposition.
The Clinton administration decided to join forces with the KLA, a group of insurgents to take apart Yugoslavia. That was a bad idea, and typical of the kind of international trouble making the Clintons like to be involved with.
Yeah give in to a bully. Thats the ticket. Imagine the reaction here if Biden/Obama was the one coming up with this idea.
