A senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday that some Russian troops in Ukraine have surrendered or sabotaged their vehicles to avoid fighting, according to The New York Times.
The official said that a large amount of the Russian troops are young, and have not been trained properly in preparation for this all-out invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian troops are reportedly dealing with fuel and food shortages, in addition to low morale.
The official added that there have been cases where Russian troops have punched holes in their vehicles' gas tanks to avoid continue fighting. They didn't clarify how the military has determined these incidents or how many units have acted in similar ways to avoid fighting.
Over the past two days, Russian troops have created a 40-mile convoy of tanks and vehicles around the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
The Pentagon official added that the Russian commanders in charge could be "regrouping and rethinking" their strategy.
"They have a lot of power available to them," the Pentagon official said.
About 80% of the nearly 150,000 Russian troops on Ukraine's borders have joined in on the fight, the official added.

Pardon me, I mistook your statement as supporting the idea that Russians were surrendering themselves and their equipment. I have my doubts about that, because I’ve been wrong about so many things that have and have not happened.
Obviously there is an objective truth, but it doesn’t seem to be in the combatants’ interests to speak it. And frankly our own government has motivations to lie that go well beyond this war.

According to many reports, he was suffering from a form of cancer and was operated on last year sometime. Part of the mitigation strategy in cases like his are massive doses of steroids - a side effect is a moon-faced appearance and personality instability. He is reported to be bitter, angry and very isolated. So if not instability, explain why a leader spends 22 years rebuilding his country, only to piss it away in a week?
I don’t remember reading any reports speculating on Putin’s health much before the Ukraine crisis. Maybe I missed them. But this could also serve the purposes of providing political cover to Biden as well as inviting the Oligarchs to replace Putin.
The good news is, things can only get better. We have an escapee from a nursing home in charge, a straight-up ho behind him, along with a deranged hag who claps her knuckles together when hearing about health risks to veterans. Putin must think he has it made in the shade. But he has another think coming. America will be back. Right now things are dark, no reason to pretend otherwise. But it ain’t over till it’s over.
