Feds rescind license extension for Florida nuclear plant
The Associated Press ^ | February 25, 2022

MIAMI (AP) — Federal officials have reversed a decision to allow a South Florida nuclear power plant to continue running for another 30 years by ordering a new review of potential environmental risks, including those posed by climate change.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued an order Thursday to reverse a 2019 decision by a previous, Republican-led commission to extend Florida Power & Light’s operating license for two reactors at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant until 2052 and 2053, respectively. The reactors have been operating since 1972 and 1973, respectively.

The reversal gives environmental groups a chance to reiterate concerns that federal regulators didn’t adequately consider the risks of climate change and flooding from sea level rise when granting the last extension. The NRC plans to hold hearings after staff completes a new site-specific environmental impact statement.

Besides the reversal at Turkey Point, the NRC also reversed a license extension for the Peach Bottom nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Days after taking office in January 2021, President Joe Biden named Democrats to take over the NRC and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The agencies have been reevaluating decisions made by Republican-led panels under former President Donald Trump, including the 2019 decision on Turkey Point.

Oh, no!!! The manatee and crocodiles need the warm effluence of the plant in the winter.

Time to Succeed

***Look, Trumplican. You have signed up with one of the most enviable login names on FR, so we Trumplicans expect you to get some things right. One of those things is to know the difference between the words 'secede' and 'succeed'.

from my home page

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Secession

It's time for us to jettison those who reject our national values because there's no changing them. Time to secede.

We should extend the invitation to secede on a county by county basis.

While we're at it, since we'd be forming a new country, we should extend the invitation to counties in Canada and Mexico as well.

Note that this option is becoming increasingly popular.

Just Wow..!

So, folks are suppose to rub their legs together in order to generate the electricity needed for their new electric cars.??

Or is this just a bit of spit and hate aimed at DeSantis..

I kinda like that turn of the phrasing. I think I’ll update the tagline page with it.

The global elitists want US to live like The Flintstones, while they live like The Jetsons.

“manatees congregate amongst the warm water discharge from Turkey Point during the cooler months”

Excellent point, we can blame every manatee death on Biden.

Throw in the cost of the nuclear plant operating for 100 years versus the cost of windmills and solar panels for 100 years and I would be willing to guess the nuclear plant comes out far cheaper for the 100 years.
***I’m okay with that, as long as you include the cost of waste disposal, including accident sites such as 3mileIsland. For those windmills and solar panels, you only need to account for about 50 years of waste disposal before it’s safe to build houses on top of the landfill. For nuke power, you’d have to wait 10,000 years or more. There is right now no currently accepted and approved path for storing nuclear waste permanently in the USA. Once that solution is generated [probably gonna be Yucca Mountain, probably gonna be 5x costlier than was proposed], the overall cost of fission power will be less competitive than squirrels on treadmills.

It’s about damned time that they began revoking licenses. Ignoring the hysterical ‘climate change’ reference, a nuclear power plant should not be a facility which can be defined as ‘antique’.

That stated, this was not one of the plants which should have been shut down.

Yes, a heaping load of sarcasm, yet I’ll still get flamed.

Why, after 2 years of manufactured ‘science’, should FReepers be surprised that they’ll adopt their policies by any means necessary?

Nice. Let’s shut them down like Germany did. Maybe we can also become dependent on Russian energy.

Yeah, real smart - we’re suffering from incredible inflation, much of it caused by high energy prices, and we’re having to beg often hostile oil-producing countries to produce more (which is against their financial interests, at least), and the idiot feds do this.

All part of the plan to destroy the country by the death of a thousand cuts - prove me wrong.

So are you saying windmills and solar panels are the way to go ??

I believe the useful life of windmills and solar panels is approximately 20 so the cost of enough solar panels and windmills would have to be refreshed 5 times over 100 years so your disposal cost would have to paid 5 more times over 100 years

So are you saying

windmills and solar panels are the way to go ??
***Did I SAY that? NO. I said upthread that LENR is 25 times more bang-for-the-buck than CHF, both of which will be far better than fission.

I believe the useful life of windmills and solar panels is approximately 20 so the cost of enough solar panels and windmills would have to be refreshed 5 times over 100 years
***You are studiously avoiding the cost of posting guards over nuclear waste that's harmfully radioactive for 50,000 years. THAT is what we are comparing the costs to.

so your disposal cost would have to paid 5 more times over 100 years
***Your disposal costs would still have to be paid 20,000 years from now.

Feds? Who specifically

Find him, destroy him (or her).

Using the law as a cudgel causes forfeiture of personal rights

Biden declared war on Florida.

Let’s not forget the cost of lithium or one other storage system unlike nuclear power sometimes the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow because a solar and wind system is inherently unreliable without a storage system

I kinda like

“deserts loaded with silica sands used to make either PV panels or heliostat mirrors either of which drive a silicon based gigawatt scale storage right next door. Well insulated tanks can keep heat for months up to years if needed the area of the tank walls decrease at the cube root function as the volume goes up...”

Sea level rise that isn’t happening presently.

Their argument seems to have a fatal flaw, if they are worried about the ocean rising then use of clean nuclear energy can help to prevent it.

Things that make you go hummm.

I don’t live in FL, so no skin in game.

I do note that:
https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/gen-comm/info-notices/1993/in93053.html
“Information Notice No. 93-53: Effect of Hurricane Andrew on Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station and Lessons Learned”
dated 1993

Read.

Not quite Fukashima. A cautious management team went to Mode 4 Operations - and when all power was lost as was all communication and radiological monitoring.

The plant sits at sea level on Biscayne Bay.

Despite this being a very obvious political attack on the FL, I do support the shutdown order.

YMMV
