The White House said President Biden would soon issue an executive order that would ban new investment, trade and financing by US people and entities in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
“This EO [executive order] will also provide authority to impose sanctions on any person determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine,” said Jen Psaki, White House press secretary. “We will also soon announce additional measures related to today’s blatant violation of Russia’s international commitments.”
Psaki said the measures were separate from the economic sanctions the US has threatened to impose if Putin invades Ukraine. “We are continuing to closely consult with Allies and partners, including Ukraine, on next steps and on Russia’s ongoing escalation along the border with Ukraine.”

This was while chatting with my Ukranian friend **before** we each knew that Putin was sending in “peacekeeping” forces.
Now that this bit of information is known - this seems to be less about making a deal with the west and more about “having his way”.

It was all about just having something for the press to report that Biden “Did Something.”
Aside from any distractions, war is also a great way to expand state powers through "emergency acts."
Remember how Bush's handlers pushed the Patriot Act through after 9/11, no questions asked.
If there's a war in Ukraine, Biden's handlers will claim a need for expanded federal powers to clamp down on "domestic terrorism."
Similar to what Trudeau is now doing in Canada, claiming the truckers strike is an "emergency" that requires the freezing of bank accounts.
Putin has been playing chess but starting with a full chess set on his side while his opponents are down a rook, a bishop and a queen lol.

The Russian president was advised by top security officials to acknowledge the independence of the breakaway regions
Following a meeting of Russia’s Security Council, President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will decide on Monday whether to recognize the two self-declared breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in Ukraine’s war-torn Donbass region.
Speaking at the end of the session, during which government ministers and the head of the country’s security agencies claimed that the humanitarian situation across the border is worsening, Putin said that “I have heard your opinions. A decision will be made today,” before ending the meeting.
