New Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is, according to the NFL, a minority. That matters because the NFL has specific rules about minority coaches, including that the 49ers will receive two third-round draft picks for helping to develop a minority assistant coach to the point where another team hired him to be its head coach.
But McDaniel, to many eyes, looks white. And there’s been some hand-wringing on social media about whether McDaniel is “really” a minority. For McDaniel himself, he wishes people would just identify him as human.
“It’s been very odd, to tell you the truth, this idea of ‘identifying’ as something,” McDaniel said when asked about it today. “I think people identify me as something, but I identity as a human being and my dad is Black. So whatever you want to call it, I know there’s a lot of people with a shared experience. It’s weird that it comes up because I’ve just tried to be a good person. And I think my background opens my eyes a little bit. I don’t have any real experience with racism because I think you identify me as something close to — I don’t know. I know my mom experienced it when she married my dad. I know my dad experienced it, that’s in my family. But I guess that makes me a human being that can identify with other people’s problems.”
It’s a thorny subject and McDaniel would clearly prefer to be talking about football. But he answered the question well.

McDaniel said in another interview that he has one black grandparent. Assuming that black grandparent is of 100% African descent (unlikely), he’s at most 25% black. So 1/4the of his life matters. Or something. It’s all so stupid, but as long as there’s this obsession with race and racism, the race hustlers and the media get disoriented and confused when they’re confronted with someone like McDaniel.
I would have thought he was Greek or Italian.
As he said, it doesn’t matter, and people fixate on race way too much these days. He seems mature enough to take the annoying question without blowing up and cussing the reporter out.
When something seems unusual, people will ask questions, sometimes silly questions. Think of the 7foot 1 inch real estate salesman who always, always gets some kind of wisecrack about his height. People will ask :”Hey Stretch, how’s the weather up there?..haHA Ha!!” and laugh at their own joke as though they are the first one’s to ever ask that.
Back in the 1920’s, he would have been called a Quadroon.

Yep, and there was a term “octoroon” if you were 1/8th (e.g., if McDaniel sired offspring with a 100% caucasian woman).
It’s kind of interesting from a genetic perspective how some characteristics tend to get “bred out” as the percentage of ancestors of any race drops. Living in the Bay Area, I know a fair number of people who are 1/4th Asian, 3/4th caucasian. And in many if not most cases, a random observer wouldn’t necessarily guess that they’re 1/4th Asian.
Maybe they should do the brown paper bag test like Democrats used to do.
(If your skin was darker than a brown paper bag, the Democrats wouldn’t let you in to vote.)
Quadroon or not the niners will be given 2 extra 3rd round picks in the next 2 drafts. Stupid. If you’re a 49er fan it’s smart.
There was an image of a poster in my high school history book showing prices for humans listed with these words - doubling in price with each ‘halving’ Octoroon $1600 maybe? Revolting to think about.
Nowadays, the history book would not be allowed in most schools. People should know just how different it was.

During the slave-years in the US, Virginia and other states considered Quadroons to be legally Caucasian.
Sally Hemmings, Thomas Jefferson's famous slave, was an Octoroon (1/8 black, 7/8 white).
