Conservative lawmakers in Iowa introduced a bill this week that would require cameras to be installed in nearly every K-12 school classroom across the state, allowing parents to see livestreams.
Teachers advocates have criticized the effort as one designed to censor classrooms and intimidate educators who focus on subjects such as race and history.
The bill is the latest to be introduced by conservative legislators in states across the U.S., including Florida, who have launched efforts against what they say is critical race theory.
The Iowa bill, H.F. 2177, would require that cameras be placed in every public school classroom in the state, except for physical education and special education classes.
The cameras would feed to livestreams that could be viewed on the internet by parents, guardians and others.
Under the bill, teachers, administrators and other school staff members who fail to keep the cameras active and in working order or who “obstruct” the camera’s views could be fined up to 5 percent of their weekly salary per infraction. The cameras would be bought with funds already allocated to school districts.
The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Norlin Mommsen, a Republican who represents a rural district in eastern Iowa, comes amid a monthslong effort by state GOP lawmakers that critics say aims to limit what is allowed to be taught in public school classrooms.
Mommsen said the primary purpose of his bill is to “increase the involvement of parents in their children’s education.”
Education groups and unions immediately condemned the legislation as censorship.
“and intimidate educators who focus on subjects such as race and history.”
They do get it.
Good.

The good. If cops need to be recorded, so should teachers. Corrupting young minds is just as bad as shooting someone.
The bad. Does this become an open buffet for pedo viewing pleasure?
I don’t see the problem here. I mean the left insists that cops wear body cameras all the time so turn about is fair play.
Good idea
As a teacher, I ASKED to have cameras in my classroom, so some parents could see how out of control their kids were.
They do that at work. Every time you call a company what do they announce before a live person comes on?
Uhhh, wouldn't it be more of a move toward transparency?
Put live feeds on the existing video cameras on school busses. Then parents could really see how sweet their kids are.
How can conservatives be for this? Gets children used to big brother watching them 24/7. If you are so worried about what teachers are doing, saying and teaching, then home school.
They have our children in their hands, I’m all for this.
As a conservative, I would welcome cameras in a class room since I am paying taxes to support that activity. The class room is one of the very few tax supported activities that the tax payer is forbidden to monitor. I wholly agree with home schooling but the parents of home schooled children still pay the taxes that support the public school system The taxpayer deserves to observe that he is supporting an education activity and not some Marxist indoctrination cell.
This is the worst idea ever. Want to throw away all the political momentum we get by opposing CRT? Then vote for a surveillance state. Yeah, that’s a winning strategy. Sheesh. Get a clue people.
These same leftists didn’t have a problem putting body-cams on Police Officers. Just sayin ...
What teachers are failing to consider is that these same cameras could be used to document what actually happened when a child makes false acquisitions against them.
Maybe if they focused on actual teaching of real subjects, they would have nothing to be concerned about.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Should be this way in every classroom in the country. To protect the students from teachers.
It’s for the children......
I threatened to record the class on my video system and the kids revolted. They were scared “s8**less “ over the idea that I might record their behavior.
