Giant iceberg blocks scientists' study of 'Doomsday Glacier'

Antarctica’s so-called Doomsday Glacier, nicknamed because it is huge and coming apart, is mostly thwarting an international effort to figure out how dangerously vulnerable it is.

A large iceberg broke off the deteriorating Thwaites glacier and, along with sea ice, it is blocking two research ships with dozens of scientists from examining how fast its crucial ice shelf is falling apart.

Scientists from around the world are part of a multi-year $50 million international effort to study the Florida-sized glacier by land, sea and below for the brief time the remote ice is reachable during the Antarctic summer.....

What worries scientists is that leading edge of the huge glacier is breaking apart in many places. Even though total collapse of the glacier could take hundreds or thousands of years, the edge is falling apart much sooner. And if that goes, researchers fear nothing may stop the rest from doing the same.....

If all of Thwaites collapses, it could raise seas around the globe more than two feet (65 centimeters) but that could take hundreds of years, scientists say.....

University of Washington ice scientist Ian Joughin, who isn’t part of the research consortium, cautioned that while Thwaites is a big concern, especially the collapse of giant ice cliffs, the earliest his computer simulations show that happening is 200 years from now.

So clearly this BS.

< Chem 101 > Melting floating ice does not affect the level of the supporting water. < /Chem 101 >

News Flash! Ice Melts!! Who knew?

Its a real possibility that the ginormous huge stupendous ice berg will cause sea level to rise a thousandth of a centimeter, drowning New York, and covering Holland as well as most of Florida.

We gotta get to high ground before anyone else or they won’t let us on the island. Run!!

Even though total collapse of the glacier could take hundreds or thousands of years.

The other night they had a documentary on this and they determined that its melting from underneath the sea floor. BUT this is more fodder for the idiots screaming about climate change

I just know there's no government money (aka our tax-money) involved in this endless research scam. I'm sure we ALL agree!

I remember an article about fifty years ago, Pop Mechanics, Pop Science or Mechanics Illustrated, in which it was suggested pulling icebergs from Antarctica to the Middle East for fresh water supplies.

Here is a map of the world during the last ice age. The sea level has risen ever since.

As I understand it, the ice in question is presently over land, so while what you say is true about floating ice, that doesn't apply here.

Congress supports control of climate change which may or may not impact society, but what about the unsustainable debt that Congress is supporting? Which will do more harm?

I am waiting for ocean front property to lose its value!

Glaciers “calve”, I seem to remember films in Elementary school and on the tube that showed monster chunks of ice crashing into the sea. It is caused by GROWTH. If glaciers were shrinking, they would recede landward.

I recall reading of US war planes that landed on Greenland after WW 2, that were buried under ice. It seems like that proves that 1940’s to now has been normal climate wise. It heats up, it cools off. Same-O Same-O. The strangest thing about rising ocean levels is, the local water level of the Pacific is the same as it was in the 1940’s, so says my Father and the marks on the pilings that were driven to shepherd and hold logs from the glory days of lumberjacks.

The ice in my water glass routinely makes my glass overflow when it melts. I am sure all of you have this happen too. But it never happens.

This is how stupid the general public is. They don’t know that the iceberg is already floating and won’t raise the water levels one millimeter.
