A bill that would have created the nation's only government-funded universal health care system died in the California Assembly on Monday as Democrats could not gather enough support to bring it for a vote ahead of a legislative deadline.
The bill had to pass by midnight on Monday to have a chance at becoming law this year. Democrats needed 41 votes for that to happen, a threshold that did not seem impossible given that they control 56 of the 80 seats in the state Assembly and universal health care has long been a priority for the party.
But intense lobbying from business groups put pressure on more moderate Democrats, who face tough reelection campaigns this year in newly-redrawn districts. Plus, Democrats were missing four lawmakers from their caucus — including three of their more liberal members — who had resigned recently to take other jobs.

We don’t have any freedom left in CA. They stole it or regulated it away already.
Now San Jose’s pimping Gun liability insurance as requirements to own firearms in city limits. Cartel Members exempt of course.
The hate-America marxists will eventually win. California is a lost state.
And, many many more taxpaying Californians have just resolved to leave the state.
Didn’t ObamaCare resolve this? While Trump reduced the penalty to $0 for the uninsured, here in NJ the state government installed its own penalty.
Do people still not understand that “universal health care” means we’ll all pay for it?
YESSSS!!!!

[paraphrasing M. Thatcher] "Socialism is all fun and games - until you run out of other people's money."
Regards,
In urban centers, maybe, but I would challenge anyone who has never been to California to drive through the state north to south and say that the state is defined by LA and San Francisco. Much of the state is ungovernable and will become moreso in years to come. The hate-America marxists depend upon infrastructure they cannot themselves maintain. California belongs to hippies and outlaws and it will again be a beautiful place. I'm sorry for all the nice people who will be caught up in the turmoil of that transition whenever it happens.
THANK GOD!
Exactly. The handful of Stupid Party Assembly members left should have voted for this as well as the separate bill with the massive tax hikes. California Patriots would still have time to get out, if you haven’t already.
California will never, ever, EVER again be a beautiful place—sorry, but it’s simply not going to happen. The overwhelming numbers of illegals, combined with fifty years’ worth of mismanagement, ensure that California is a lost cause.
Considering all the criminal foreign invaders California has, “Universal health care” would be nothing more than “Free health care for the entire world courtesy of the California taxpayer”.
You gotcher dead bill in the middle of the road.
Dead bill in the middle of the road.
You gotcher dead bill on a California road
Stinkin’ to high high heaven.
They will use this “failure” in the next election cycle, claiming the extreme right wing Republicans stopped it.
Just watch!
California is just lousy with extreme right-wingers, of course. All those Hollywood stars, just forget it. John Wayne and Ronald Reagan were just the tip of the iceberg./s
Big Tech and Big Corp have been pushing for state funded healthcare for decades.
Moves a huge burden off their balance sheets, and reduces overhead costs.
“Now San Jose’s pimping Gun liability insurance as requirements to own firearms in city limits. “
Let them enforce that.
Does anyone know what the final vote was? I couldn’t find it in the SFGate propaganda sheet.
