WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. John Katko, a respected Republican moderate whose congressional career seemed to be on the rise, announced his retirement Friday, the third of the 10 House GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach President Donald Trump last January to say they won’t seek reelection.
The New Yorker, 59, was in line to become chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee if, as seems likely, Republicans win control of the chamber in November’s elections. Lawmakers seldom step aside with such opportunities looming.
But his decision comes as Trump has remained a dominant force in the GOP, retaining the fealty of many lawmakers and threatening to use party primaries to depose those who cross him.
Now serving his fourth House term, Katko released a statement saying it was time to “enjoy my family and life in a fuller and more present way.”
While his statement made no reference to Trump, he also said, “My conscience, principles, and commitment to do what’s right have guided every decision I’ve made as a Member of Congress, and they guide my decision today.”

I love these stories. Katco was one of the worst RINOs in the house. Would love to see Chris Smith (R-NJ) join his fellow traitors who are leaving the house.
yep- got the same treatment as Kinzinger did in Illinois by his supposed “friends across the aisle”. “It’s not personal, its business”. This should be a lesson to so called “moderates” Choose a side wisely.

If he’s respected by the left, that means he’s turned traitor.
He thinks he will just step down and everything will be forgotten. No! His misery has only just begun. The same for all the other coup plotters. Pain is coming and you will pay for your treachery.

That district is probably a toss-up. May even lean Dem.

No worries. He will land a high paying job with a lobby group or one of the the other typical landing spots for ex-politicians. It will be a reward for his work going against Trump.
It won’t lean democrat this fall. Outside of inner-city districts Biden is killing the democrats in the purple districts. Killing them.
This may be the biggest train-wreck of my lifetime. I don’t even think Jimmy Carter in his darkest days hurt his party worse.
Oh let him run. Primary his ass and send a message!
