Trump slams DeSantis over Covid vaccine booster shot. Why that could pay off politically.

Those remarks weren’t just vintage Trump braggadocio. They’re likely also smart politics, as they provide an opening to win back some suburban voters that fled from him toward Biden in 2020. Sixty-seven percent of suburban residents were vaccinated as of August, according to a late summer NBC News poll. That was below the 79 percent of urban residents who got the vaccine, but well above the 52 percent of rural residents, where support for Trump runs deep. Even Biden gave credit to the Trump administration for the development of the Covid vaccine and for getting a booster shot.

It’s unclear that a pure anti-vaccine message is a winner in the 2024 Republican primary fight. Yes, vaccine opposition is highest among Republicans (along with young adults). But that still leaves millions of primary voters who got the vaccines. So Trump’s positioning could also further push DeSantis into fighting for a fringe of the GOP electorate rather than the broader coalition necessary to win the party’s 2024 presidential nomination.

Indeed, Virginia GOP Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin shows the potential for success with a middle-ground approach. The first-time candidate said on the campaign trail in the fall that he supports the Covid vaccine but opposes mask and vaccine mandates. He went on to beat former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe 50.6 percent to 48.6 percent, earning crucial support from swing voters that included younger Virginians, moderates, independents and white women, among others.

Trump’s digs against political rivals who won’t get boosters and his positive talk about vaccinations can easily be seen as cynical and craven calculations aimed not at helping humanity but in boosting his political interests. Still, whatever the motives, they’re right on the public health merits. Politically, they may also be effective

Most folks aren’t getting a booster. We have a friend who was FIRST IN LINE to get her vaxx jabs. Two doses pfizer. She has multiple co-morbidities and was terribly scared she’d get the ro.

But with all that’s happened since, she’s refusing the booster.

But she wears a mask when she visits us. LOL.

Never saw the liberal media so mendacious. Trump never named anyone, so these jokers falsely insert a name.

Why shouldn’t Trump support the vaccines he was responsible for developing?

As Prez he eagerly banned bumpstocks. If you trusted him or the NR A after that, you got played. He presided over restricting travel, restricticting freedom to chose your response to covid.
And he was too busy letting Syrans and caravans invade to replae your sons, daughters, grandchildren.. and our entire American prosperity.

Trump never named anyone

Sorta "gutless" wasn't it. Many forget but Trump never even told anyone when he got vaxed, until a staffer leaked it out months later. Now he's attacking others over not sharing their status, hmm.

I am a Trump man through and through - especially his agenda - MAGA. But I am 90 years old and I know people and I know how they tick. That statement will cost him votes. He must not burn bridges, but build bridges. DeSantis is an ally now. Nurture him, make him a team member. He is on our side.

I’ll take President Trump and/or DeSantis over any of the RINOs.

Where is the politician willing to openly reject the vax?

Preparing to lose his next election, that’s where.

Read the article. Opposing vaccines and boosters is bad politics in a country where at least 65% of the voters support them. And the swing voter who cost Trump the 2020 election is a pathetic suburban dingbat Karen who would get a booster every 48 hours if it made her feel “safe.”

We got conned again. No swamp draining, caving to omnibus bills, crappy judges, backstabbing personnel choices, etc.

Pence? Sessions? Barr? Ridiculous choices.

He KNEW they were going to steal 2020 and did NOTHING to stop them.

Well, unless Trump is so dumb that he was unaware of the media criticism of DeSantis, it was a deliberate barb. But DeSantis' people pretended it wasn't directed at him, which was the right response.

The same scorched earth campaigning that worked in 2015 and 2016 - where he went after all the other GOP contenders very hard - may not work quite as well in 2024. But I guess we'll see.

I know Trump wants to defend his “legacy” for the vaccine development, and probably he didn’t think or know they were useless or even harmful at the time. But he just let himself be totally snowballed by Fauci and the entire Deep State he told us he was resisting, and he simply won’t admit it.

Even the “suburban moms” he may think he is courting don’t like this, and they’re all Dems anyway and there’s no chance in heck that they’ll vote for him.

He should quit this nonsense right now, devote himself to his media project, support DeSantis and other good candidates, and become the next Rush, who was a kingmaker. But please, don’t attack our future hopes.

Very well said. I’ve got nothing against Trump going after Republicans like Cheney who have chosen to ally with Democrats. But as you said, he’s going to need to have some bridges to the rest, else he won’t have anyone to appoint to fill his Administration even if he should he win again.

I love Trump but this is an example of his major weakness: pride. Getting a Covid shot out was a major accomplishment for his administration and he’s getting defensive over it.

The support for the vaccine is probably higher than 65% because a lot of the unvaccinated are not antivaxx. They just haven’t taken it for themselves personally and think it should be used for the vulnerable or maybe they have natural immunity. That isn’t ativaxx.

And a lot of the people saying “go away Trump, he is done for, Desantis 2024” are the Cruz Crew and NeverTrumpers coming out of the woodwork again just trying to demoralize Trump fans. We have heard this dozens of times.

Trump rejecting the vaccines is not a strategy. If one doesn’t support Trump because he hasn’t rejected the vaccines they probably never supported Trump or got off the Trump train a year ago and cannot find a politician they do support.

I think Trump has shown the character of a man who would burn down the country rather than admitting he made a mistake with the vaccines.

I hope I’m wrong but I think he may be on the way to giving Willy Loman a run for his money.
