The jurors have found Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright, guilty on counts of both first- and second-degree manslaughter.

The jury had deliberated for approximately 28 hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Late Tuesday, they asked Judge Regina Chu what they should do if they could not arrive at a verdict. Speaking with the jurors, Chu told them they needed to continue with deliberations with open minds and a willingness to listen to each other’s viewpoints.

If you’re talking about Robert Bates, the 73 year old “Reserve Deputy”, he was convicted of 2nd degree manslaughter and served 497 days. Pretty much the same situation as Potter, he thought he had drawn his taser.

I don’t have a problem with Potter being convicted. Clearly she unjustly killed a man. 1st degree seems a stretch. Hopefully the sentence will be reasonable, rather than an effort to appease BLM.

So why aren’t you a police officer? Beneath You?

Not at all, if anything it’s above me. I’m good with numbers so I became an accountant. Only men (and some women) who are good with people, weapons and physical confrontation should consider being sworn police officers. No one else need apply in my opinion.

He didn’t deserve a death sentence but if he hadn’t resisted, it would have turned out better for all involved.

That goes to the heart of the problem some in our society refuse to recognize. By a) resisting arrest and then b) placing another LEO at risk of serious bodily injury or death he alone exposed himself to such a sentence at the scene.

That was the case even apart from whether the LEO team were aware that he was facing trials for other unrelated felonies charges. The fact the officer was entitled to use deadly force in this instance rather than the laser she selected, if true, seems to have been overlooked.

Why don't you go into PD HR since you would know how to recruit these wonderful superhumans who would never make a mistake?

The fact that you have contempt for this poor woman who spent 20 years of her life protecting schlumps like you from the likes of criminals like Daunte Wright makes me want the police to be completely defunded so you can fully experience the wonders of the Daunte Wrights of the world, up close and personal.

If she’d have just kept her damned mouth shut, this would never have made it to trial.

There’s a valuable lesson for all in this case.

Without regard for what passed her lips, it was a justifiable use of deadly force.

Period.

That stated, there is clearly a problem associated with instantaneous use of force discretion in a high stress threat environment.

Rather than toss sacrifice this woman on a woke altar, this case should be adjudicated from a training perspective and psychological vetting of officers.

Watch the video. She f**ked up bad and endangered her fellow officers, even before you consider she actually unjustifiably shot the (not really a loss) perp.

Bingo....glad to see someone has the basics down.

I have known the Mesherle clan for 50+ years - two brothers and a sister (J's father, uncle & aunt). To this day we all spend time together. All of us went to the same school, hung out together and resided down the street from one another.

There was never any denial among the entire family as to the circumstances and or the trial outcome. Johannes's father gets very incensed when Grant's family speaks of coming back for a second settlement from TPTB.

Should be noted that “mistaking Taser for gun” does not seem to be gender-linked - all the incidents in the last decade or so seem to be pretty evenly split.

I don’t recall her making a public statement, and she would have been charged based on the body camera anyway in the normal investigation following the shooting.

The camera shows that it *wasn’t* justifiable or intentional, *and* she endangered her fellow officers on the scene. At the end of the video, the officer that she almost shot across from her is looking at her with a “You almost killed me, you crazy b**tch” look on his face.

I would refer you to prior discussions. This was a training officer who still had her initial issue early Gen 1 or gen 2 Glock that looked pristine. No draw practice marks on it, which is something that if you practiced drawing and firing or did much training with on an early Glock, it tended to show up pretty fast. This woman was not practicing or training with her weapon. Reportedly she also ignored department policy on Taser carry too.

This was a training, department and political leadership failure, but the officer was far from innocent.

Should would have been fully justified in not bothering with the taser and going straight for her gun.

You want to punish her because she didn’t do that.

If she’d have just kept her damned mouth shut, this would never have made it to trial.

If she would have drawn her taser this wouldn't have gone to trial either.

If I were a WHITE police officer no way I'd ever do anything to a black. If enough did that the message would be sent.

Johannes Mehserle is a normal person who legitimately made a mistake in selecting the proper authorized compliance tool (a Taser) during a personal combat situation with a member of an out-of-control, Violent, Mob, seeking to avoid arrest, or interfere with a lawful arrest.

There is no evidence that Johannes Mehserle had any animus or predisposition to brutalize any minority or other resident of the San Francisco Bay area.

There is no evidence that Johannes Mehserle had a Bad or Negative Attitude toward his position or the BART Police.

There were several verified Reports and Complaints regarding the roving band of black Youth's aggressive Disorderly Conduct on the BART train that Mehserle responded to.

SF Bay Area Democrats are responsible for Grant's death far more than Mehserle, as they groomed Grant and his cohorts to engage in that kind of behavior.

Sounds like she panicked to me.

I wonder if she was ready for a situation like that

I think the real lesson throughout the country is just let non-compliant minority people go when they do not cooperate.

Why bother?

Sad but true. That makes their criminals a special breed above the law and they are going to prey mostly on their own community.

And the limousine liberals aren't going to care in their own cloistered gated communities.

She f**ked up bad and endangered her fellow officers...

Disagree.

I watched the video, repeatedly.

The only way she endangered her fellow officers was by MISTAKENLY selecting her Glock Pistol and discharging it at a crowded target scene.

If she had properly selected the Taser, it was reasonably safe to deploy the barbs at that same target scene, because she still has the option to NOT ENERGIZE the weapon if the barbs embed in the wrong target, thus protecting fellow officers and innocent civilians.

Potter DIDN'T REALIZE SHE HAD SELECTED HER GLOCK PISTOL, and believed she held her Taser which she could control to keep her fellow officers safe.

Plus....
I cannot locate the female police officer who said from her hospital bed “I didn’t fire because I didn’t want to be the next headline.” Thug shot her instead. A few years ago.

Tasers are supposed to be trained the same way as firearms, with lines of fire, etc., etc. Even if it had been a Taser, she broke the rules so many times it isn’t even funny.

Also, the Taser type they use? If the officer is still holding the trigger when the needles make contact, they energize. Most departments teach to continue holding the trigger.

Watch the video again - she flags/muzzle sweeps the nearside officer repeatedly, she flags the other officer... she’s all over the damn place.
