Manchin hits back at White House pressure on Biden plan
The Hill ^ | 12/20/21 11:05 AM EST | BY JORDAIN CARNEY

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) hit back at White House staff Monday and warned that Democrats had miscalculated by thinking that they could pressure him into backing President Biden's spending plan.

"They figured surely to God we can move one person. We surely can badger and beat one person up. Surely we can get enough protesters to make that person uncomfortable enough that they'll just say, 'OK I'll vote for anything,'" he said in a local radio interview.

"Well, guess what? I'm from West Virginia. I'm not from where they're from and they can just beat the living crap out of people and think they'll be submissive, period," Manchin added.

Manchin's comments, made during a radio interview with West Virginia MetroNews's Hoppy Kercheval, come after he sent a jolt through Washington, D.C., on Sunday by announcing that he would not vote for the sweeping roughly $2 trillion climate and spending bill that was passed by the House earlier this year.

I don’t know how you come back from that interview. He essentially said, with puffed out chest, I’m not going to be bullied.

This is all a staged act, as far as I'm concerned.

Probably a lot more truth to that than many want to recognize. The Rats do it. The Pubbies do it. Let's count who can vote this way or that in order to pass the crappy legislation we want to pass, but still protect the individuals that represent toss-up districts.

I don’t know... in some states, yes the radical folks dominate, but get outside of those states and the Dem base isn’t nearly as radical there....

We will see...

Chuck Schumer is owned by Wall Street. He may openly support a lot of Marxism in the Senate, but he doesn’t want anything passed into law that undermines his corporate masters.

It is not clear that Manchin actually wanted to convict Trump though. Unless they had 67 votes to convict, a YES vote does nothing.

To that you can add the scandal around the Executive Masters of Business program at WVU with the resultant shake up of the school’s administration.

A bunch of us should pledge to $$upport him if he jumps to independent, and caucuses with pubbies. That would end permanent socialism in the US.

Heard he won’t because Trump won’t support him, bc impeachment vote. Hope that is not true. Our country has too much to lose.

“It is not clear that Manchin actually wanted to convict Trump though. Unless they had 67 votes to convict, a YES vote does nothing.”

His YES vote meant a lot. The Dims knew the vote would fail. They pressured Manchin to maintain the Dim voting block, preventing Trump from claiming a bipartisan acquittal. The Romney defection was just a bonus for the Dims.

Manchin admitted that it was a political prosecution, but went along with it anyway. He pretends to be an independent thinker, but he is blue at his core.

It might be because of the time. I was just watching home movies of my little sister skating on the sidewalk with her friends back in 1963 at our old apartment in Aneheim, California. It was “1950’s idylic”. We could see the Disney Materhorn from our bedroom window and there was an orange orchard across from our school two blocks away.

My wife and I revisited the neighborhood in 1999. It was a drug addled cesspool. Only the buildings gave away that it was the original place.

Bingo. I don’t think they have 49 votes. So they’re having Manchin play the Bad Guy. Good for him back home, good for the other d’s to deflect blame. I doubt they’re off by 12. But off by 4-6? Yeah. Very possible.

Y’know, my (ex) ‘rat sense is itching*. The d’s are very quick to push aside losers. Especially when they’re losing otherwise winnable races for others.

*although admittedly it might just mean I want a piece of cheese.

I have heard several radio interviews over the last few months where Manchin has been very clear that he would not support any “social spending” bills that amounted to more than 1.5T$, and those “fully funded” by mechanisms explicitly stated in the bill.

The House (and WH bill) are not even close to satisfying his well-stated position.

He gave them a FAIL - NYET.

Kudos to Manchin.

West Virginia, which was solidly Democratic territory for much of the 20th century, has consistently voted Republican in presidential elections since 2000. Republicans started making gains in the state in the 21st century due to championing of environmentalism by Democrats such as Al Gore, which challenged entrenched coal-mining interests.

West Virginia became Trump's second-strongest state in 2020, changing places with Wyoming, after having been Trump's strongest state by vote share in 2016. West Virginia was one of two states where Trump won every county, the other being Oklahoma.

I am done with ANY 'social spending'!
