Scientists mystified, wary, as Africa avoids COVID disaster

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — At a busy market in a poor township outside Harare this week, Nyasha Ndou kept his mask in his pocket, as hundreds of other people, mostly unmasked, jostled to buy and sell fruit and vegetables displayed on wooden tables and plastic sheets. As in much of Zimbabwe, here the coronavirus is quickly being relegated to the past, as political rallies, concerts and home gatherings have returned.

Chloroquine is still widely used in Africa, along with Fansidar, because mefloquine and Malrone are too expensive.

You are right that chloroquine resistance is widespread, but, as they say, “TIA” (this is Africa), lots of bad things or things that don’t make sense happen all the time.

Doxycycline is a close relative to HCQ

They are completely unrelated to each other.

Agree it is still used. Also agree about TIA! (Same in SE Asia where resistance has a longer history.) My understanding is it is mainly used by locals as a cure (in conjunction with artemisinin), not as a preventative. I could be wrong on that, of course.

I am skeptical, though, that a huge percentage of the population is popping HCQ every day. Am I wrong on that? I am open to correction! I just wonder where the truth lies.

No, doxy is a later generation tetracycline, not at all related to HCQ. I ate it nearly every day for malaria prevention when I lived in an area where resistant malaria was rife. It works pretty well, so long as you don’t get eaten alive by mozzies positively loaded with the stinking parasites (as I was one time).

No, of course you are not. Africans taking malaria prophylaxis (of any type) is very uncommon.

Thanks! It’s been quite a few years since I was up on all that, so I’m grateful for your response. Speaking of malaria drugs and Covid, I was curious just now whether artemisinin might be helpful, as it has been looked at for treating so many other maladies not malarial. Sure enough, there have been clinical trials. It looks like it could be promising, but here in the US where MAB available, I will go with that if I get Covid again.

Artemisinin really rocks when it comes to malaria, though. Truly astonishing. I could tell stories, but will spare you.

Thank you for being a voice of reason here and sharing your knowledge and experience. I really do appreciate it.

Because the DNC wants to resume rounding up slaves in black Africa, by getting their muzzie allies to do it for them, as before, duh.

Considering everything they deal with there, their immune systems should be bullet-proof.

One of my wife’s younger relatives, a 50 something niece, and her family are in Namibia, Africa.

They were concerned as the state dept had earlier made this African country a no go due to Covid 19.

That changed and they have been there for several months.

This relative said that she and her family were in more Covid danger flying in and out of American airports getting to Namibia and on the airplanes than living in Namibia.

Your comment above seems to be the reality in these poor African countries and our so called homeless camps:

“Considering everything they deal with there, their immune systems should be bullet-proof.”

Yep, your immune system is like a muscle, use it, or lose it.

We try to keep ourselves in plastic bubbles and not get exposed, that we never allow our immune systems to fully develop.

Children are supposed to play in dirt and get exposed to germs.

Sorry, what I mean't to say, according to my doctor, they BOTH work well in fighting a BACTERIAL LUNG infection.

While P. Falciparum is chloroquin-resistant, does the same hold true for hydroxychloroquin. Is that one reason HCQ was developed? More information needed.

Do you have any info on the correlation between having Sickle Cell Trait, or Disease and resistance or vulnerability to Covid? I know that the Sickle Cell Trait is supposed to be good for reducing Malarial illness. Last year I was doing research on the blood disorders occurring in vaccine takers. I was curious about risks to people with Sickle Cell and also Factor V Leiden. A friend has FVL and had severe response to Moderna Vaccine, especially the second dose. He also caught Covid from his pre-school child a few months later.

One thing that protects Africans in Africa is sun exposure. The fact that former Africans living in the US die at 2.5 times the rate of white people is that they cannot absorb Vitamin D formed in skin oils through their darker skin. A hospital study was done of severely ill Negro men and around 80% were Vitamin D deficient. Since about 1/3rd the US population is D deficient, 2.5 times 33% would be close to 80% very ill Blacks. This study also tested people who were homeless, and found very few were deficient. Lots of outdoor sun exposure. Poverty was not found to be the correlation they were testing for. Covid rates are moving North again in the US as the winter advances and sun exposure decreases. Why is the government NOT URGING all people to take Vitamin D in low sun areas, and especially if you have dark skin??? Is this criminally actionable??

Actually, HCQ (hydroxychloroquine) is less effective than chloroquine against resistant P.falciparum. Which is too bad, as it has fewer side effects. See my post here:

(For some reason, spell check changed “much” to “couch” in that post — sorry about that!)

Ivermectin is not used in Africa for prevention.

Careful, to some that’s getting close to blasphemy.

It looks like Covid is very bad news for those with sickle cell:

https://www.jwatch.org/na53876/2021/08/24/are-covid-19-outcomes-affected-sickle-cell-disease

https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/sicklecell/features/scd-and-covid-19.html

I don’t know if there is any info on FVL re Covid, but it stands to reason Covid would be very bad news for those who have it, as well:

https://www.massgeneral.org/news/press-release/Elevated-clotting-factor-v-levels-linked-to-worse-outcomes-in-severe-covid-19-infections

I am sorry about your friend, and hope he recovered completely. That must have been quite scary for him and his family. Was his case serious? How is he doing now?

I vaguely recall reading something about one of the vaccines being deemed safe for those with FVL so long as they were on anticoagulants, but that is just a fuzzy recollection and very well could be wrong.

Chloroquine and HCQ are in the same drug class, malaria which is resistant to one is resistant to both.

However, the term “resistance” is not the same with malaria parasites as it is with, say bacteria. Saying a Staph aureus infection is “methicillin resistant” means using methicillin = death. Malaria has (at least) 3 levels of resistance (R1, R2, and R3) with different outcomes.

I have not read or hear anything about sickle trait and COVID. Great question, though.
