Family’s home demolished in Michigan police standoff. ‘Ripped my entire house down’ [The family is innocent. A criminal had entered their home without their permission. So the police destroyed the home of the innocent family.]

A family’s home was destroyed during a deadly 16-hour standoff between Michigan police and an armed suspect who barricaded himself inside, news outlets report.

Police surrounded the home in Kalamazoo on the morning of Nov. 8, after a wanted man — 35-year-old Alex Rawls — made his way inside, according to Michigan State Police. Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office were at the scene.

Andrea Young, her fiance and her five children were home at the time, but quickly got out and made their way to safety, WOOD reported.

“[Police] stepped us out of the way — me and my children — and proceeded to do what they were doing,” Young told the outlet. In a few hours, their home would be gone.

At one point, Young’s landlord, Gary Apps, was called in by police to draw maps of the house, WOOD reported.

“So, I gave them my card and said, ‘Call me if I need to do anything else or know anything else.’ Then at 11 o’clock that night, I watched on TV the pictures of the side of the house having been pushed in,” Apps told the TV station. “Then the next morning, the house was down.”

A warrant had been issued for Rawls after he was accused of shooting a woman five times on Nov. 1, about one week earlier, Michigan Live reported.

Looks like this was a case of cops not wanting to take a chance at getting shot. I don’t blame them for not wanting to risk themselves. The family got out before, so there was no urgency to raid the house.

But she’s still screwed. Police departments don’t pay compensation and insurance doesn’t cover that.

This ought to be a Fifth Amendment takings case, i.e. with just compensation being paid to the homeowner, for the public purpose of getting the bad guy, but IIRC something like this happened about a year ago and the courts ruled that the innocent homeowners in that case were SOL.

In this case I have to ask, what would we expect the police to do? Leave the suspect in possession of the house?

As for the family as renters, not much different than a house fire or tornado. Local relief agencies like Salvation Army or Red Cross will provide for a short stay while they seek replacement rental.

Landlord has just gotten a total loss on his rental house. What is not covered by insurance will go on tax return. Business loss can go back several years so he might recover prior year taxes. If not, the loss carries forward against future profits.

While it may be their home it wasnt their house. The landlord is mentioned in the article.

The story says there was a landlord, so they are renters. They still lost their shit, but the landlord is the big looser. And he cooperated.
If the family had renters insurance, they will find out how good it is.
As for the landlord, I guess he will find out how good his insurance is soon too.

And the police department in question has not apologized or released any explanation or statement.

Most policies do not cover deliberate destruction by the government.

No pic of the perp in the articles. For the obvious reason. It’s getting to the point where you can predict the race of the criminal by the lack of a picture. .

Which is why self defense is an important thing to embrace. If they would have shot the intruder after he had entered the house. None of this might have happened.

But of course 90% of the people are sheep and anyone wanting to be a sheep dog is taught at a young age to " use your words" against the wolves of this world.

Minor detail. It was the landlord’s house. And the resident’s belongings.

No. He was found dead from gunshot wounds from the cops. The story said he shot at the cops and they return fire, but didn't give a timeline on whether it happened during the teardown or if he had been dead for hours and then the cops decided to knock down some walls.

My bet is that the SWAT team had a new armored toy and they we eager to knock something down with it.

I’m sure all the police who tore down the house are putting up her family in their own houses. They are such good people.

Had they shot the intruder in self defense I’d guess that they would be prosecuted, especially if the intruder was a person of a protected class and the MSM got wind of it.
