Cadillac Drops 40% of Dealerships Unwilling to Invest in the Conversion to Electric Vehicles
Reuters ^ | Nov 8, 2021 | Joseph White

Cadillac has largely completed a restructuring of its U.S. dealer network and expects to have 560 dealers by the end of this year, compared with about 920 three years ago, said Rory Harvey, head of the global Cadillac brand.

GM (GM.N) has booked a total of $274 million in costs during 2020 and 2021 related to the effort to buy out Cadillac dealers who were not prepared to invest $200,000 to $500,000 per store in the equipment and training to support the brand's shift to an all-electric vehicle lineup, planned by 2030.

I already get annoyed having to charge phone watch and tablet but a car?? Yeah that’s gonna be a huge annoyance. What if you forget to plug it in? How is everyone going to hàve room for a charging station?

Is there a $20k ICE car you want for 6 people?

Driving from Florida to San Diego sounds like hell.

I’d fly before making that trip in my 2010 Caddy wagon.

Horse crap. I can fill my car 20 gallon (440 miles WITH the air conditioning on max) in less than 10 minutes. How long to charge a battery car to go 440 miles? My 5 year old car still gets the same range on a full tank as it did when it was new. What’s the deterioration in the charge capacity in an EV battery in 5 years? How much does it cost to get an electrician install a 240v charger in your garage $1000? I don’t need a charger. Where does electricity come from? Fossil fuels, nuclear, and hydro. Solar and wind are jokes. Gas comes from the ground. Has to be refined and transported, but you can store it. You can’t store electricity except in batteries. You don’t have to burn it in a power plant transmit it through wires stepping it up and stepping it down losing energy at every step. The transportation industry in the US uses a annually about thirteen times the energy of the total output of all the nuclear plants in the US. Where is the energy to charge all these vehicles going to come from. EVs use manganese cobalt various rare earth elements and copious quantities of lithium. Where are all there resources coming from? The lithium fairy? The rare earth fairy?

In spite of the wishful thinking on the part of the ignorant stupid greenies and the cynical hard left socialists/communists the laws of physics can’t be repealed.

I have 3 old vehicles that hold 40 gal. and a new one that takes on 36 gal.

YMMV

Except for the weird distributor on the mid-90s B-bodies, which ones don’t have good support? Heck, you can build an entire mid-60s Mustang from aftermarket parts. I cannot believe the pickups will EVER be short on parts. I see too many really old ones here in Phoenix.

There’s an idea. Buy some Lotus 7 kits. If the whole world is going to be the Village, you may as well have the matching cool car.

Those are clearly racis’ MAGA Laws.

I hate to say it because I have always been a GM person, but it is time for GM to disappear.

Try again. A gas fire is not equivalent to a LI battery fire. Tell me again why they now instruct an EV owner to not park in a garage or in a parking structure? Or not parking near other vehicles. What about the risks of a battery fire in a tunnel? We’ll be reading about that one soon enough. Hear about the spontaneous combustion of the EV buses in Germany? One bus spontaneously caught fire and then ignited the 10 adjacent buses. Lithium battery fires cannot be extinguished - they just have to burn themselves out taking whatever is near them with them. The list goes on.

I was waiting for someone to make the stupid equivalency argument, that gasoline car fires are just as bad.

My wife and I love our driving trips.

To each his own. And no one is forcing you to buy an ICE vehicle.

I’m guessing there is more to the motivation to scrap 40% of their dealers. Doesn’t pass the smell test.

yes, i meant hydrogen fuel cell electric

thats what all the current hydrogen car designs are

but you need to have an easy home device that you can make your own hydrogen and then fill into your car’s hydrogen storage tank

Excellent point.

Also, whenever I mail a package at the post office, they always ask if the package contains lithium batteries.

IMO Cadillac is moving themselves in the direction of becoming extinct. WHY?

An ELECTRIC Cadillac is akin to chocolate covered ants.

Just not a strong demand for them.

GM has been dropping support for the older cars; those parts they have left, like ignition modules, are now made in China like the rest of the aftermarket and are garbage.

Ford has dropped most support for any 05 or older vehicles that aren’t Mustangs. The aftermarket is following suit. Check out the Ford truck forums for the many tales of woe about no good parts available. I just got out of a Bronco a couple years ago and the mechanical parts support was getting dire then.

With the exception of the Camry and Mustang, the rest of your list is similar - parts support is dire enough that you just can’t use one as a daily driver as the parts just aren’t stocked in local stores any more.

The Lotus 7 kits will have to use some of those “modern” engines you appear to dislike. :P

You are incorrect on your charge times. 200 miles range is 15 minutes per spec, or 80% of capacity. If you want to charge to 100%, it’s about 70 minutes.

It’s still not great, but it’s not the two hours per stop plus two hours to top up if desired that you say.

I have enough solar capacity to run the i3 s Rex.

I don’t need the grid at all.

Look, I understand it’s limitations. My Mercury Mariner
can make it over a thousand miles with a full tank and my
5 gallon extras x 4.

IMO < it’s quite likely they are going to start limiting
movements.

In parts of Australia they’re under almost complete house
arrest. That may be coming here.

Will Trump even be alive in 2024? The stakes are ramping
up.

Good luck on that. Study it and think about how you can
make it work. You may find a way. Good luck.
