Almost every morning for five years, 1st Lt. Sukhbir Toor has pulled on the uniform of the U.S. Marine Corps. On Thursday, he also got to put on the turban of a faithful Sikh.
It was a first for the Marine Corps, which almost never allows deviations from its hallowed image, and it was a long-awaited chance for the officer to combine two of the things he holds most dear.
“I finally don’t have to pick which life I want to commit to, my faith or my country,” Toor, 26, said in an interview. “I can be who I am and honor both sides.”
His case is the latest in a long-running conflict between two fundamental values in the U.S. military: the tradition of discipline and uniformity, and the constitutional liberties the armed forces were created to defend.
While Sikh troops in Britain, Australia and Canada have long worn turbans in uniform, and scores of Sikhs do so now in other branches of the military, Toor’s turban is the first in the 246-year history of the Marine Corps. For generations, the Marine Corps has fought any change to its strict appearance standards, saying that uniformity was as essential to a fighting force as well-oiled rifles.
The Marine Corps has made the allowance only to a point. Toor can wear a turban in daily dress at normal duty stations, but he cannot do so while deployed to a conflict zone, or when in dress uniform in a ceremonial unit, where the public could see it.

Kick his ass out.
Are the Marines so hard up for recruits that they even bother with this question?
There should be absolutely ZERO deviation in the uniform. Wearing a turban doesn’t make you a Sikh and taking it off doesn’t mean you aren’t a Sikh.
I know very little...almost nothing,in fact...about Sikhs. I’ve read positive..and negative...things about them. But to this guy I say “conform,or you’re history”.
This individual is out of uniform. Period.
Toor has appealed the restrictive decision to the Marine Corps commandant, and he says that if he does not get a full accommodation, he will sue the Marines.
“We’ve come a long way, but there is still more to go,” he said. “The Marine Corps needs to show it really means what it has been saying about strength in diversity — that it doesn’t matter what you look like, it just matters that you can do your job.”
Troublemaker.
If they allow this then it sets a precedence for allowing marines from Texas to wear cowboy hats.
Didn’t the Marine generals just authorize the combat nursing fatigues... which can be worn by all 57 genders of Marines?!?
“The Marines Reluctantly Let a Sikh Officer Wear a Turban...”
That same woke Obama commandant wasn’t so reluctant to ban symbols of the South though was he.
Let him be a Sikh on his own time.
If he wants to be a Marine, he must be a Marine.
Individuals don’t get exceptions.
Period.
If you don’t get that, you’re not an American, you’re a globalist residing in America.
Royal Navy rum was never more than 110 proof, usually 105 proof. It was cut four to one before serving. Everclear is 140 proof, I dare you to drink a jigger straight.
180 proof spirit is so anhydrous you would have trouble keeping it at that proof.
What gives navy rum its color and flavor? 180 proof spirit is going to be white.
I drink 1.5 litres of navy rum every two weeks have for years. Much of what passes for rum is just flavored spirit. I’d drink more but at 75 discretion is the better part of Valor. You want some navy rum? Try Woods Bros. 107 proof navy rum or some Pusser’s Gunpowder proof. Both were issue.
Their are some (just a few) authentic aged in the cask rums that are perhaps worth a a shekel or two more. Most are a lot of hype. Find a good basic brand and enjoy. Anything over 90 proof and you’re just showing off.
Maybe he thinks he’s Gunga Din
If anything takes precedence over your pledge to protect the Const , get out. Don’t need you kind. You don’t know what loyalty means.
I dare you to drink a jigger straight.
180 proof spirit >
I have, home double distilled rum called “ Fine Wine,” ( British Guyana) , also makes an excellent burn for old fashioned Plum Pudding.
A jigger of that “fine wine” is the best thing for a cold or sore throat.Knocks it right out.
These days I usually sip Lambs Navy Rum, at 150 proof. Its good and does not cost an arm or a leg.
Leftists are infiltrating the military doing this kind of stuff with the intention of weakening it. This is exactly what the Bolsheviks were doing in the Russian military for years before The Revolution.
Says it all.
I never was a Marine but I am a veteran & I faithfully concur. You do not join the military to “do your own thing”. You can do one or the other, but not both & that’s how it should be.
. But rules are being relaxed as our military becomes more “diverse.”

And as the services more desperate for recruits from the ever-shrinking pool of young people.
“It also needs to be said that he’s not a Marine.”
Didn’t read the story to closely did ya? He is a Marine.
