Just a warning: in Texas, the “look at the gun in my waistband and give me your money” method is now very risky.

I was thinking that. Unfortunately, Houston has its share of hard-cores who use the "point the gun at them and shoot them anyway even after they hand over their money" method. That's what happened to the New Orleans off-duty cop who was murdered in Houston recently. And that cop wasn't in a bad neighborhood--he was having dinner on the patio at Grotto, a nice restaurant in the Galleria district.

The problem there is that we have too many of those walking the streets. The punk who murdered the New Orleans cop was a documented gang member with a lengthy violent juvenile record and was out on bail for an aggravated armed robbery arrest from just a few weeks before. Bail was only $40,000.

He’s at the hospital. He’s going to live.

Sorry to hear it. An evil murderer like this burglar should not be roaming the streets.

“He’s going to live.” Yes, and the hospital bills will be paid by you and me. Plus his legal defense.

Could have turned out a little bit better. We would still have had to pay for the funeral.

For a while, I carried a 3” barrel J-Frame loaded with Remington .357 Magnum 125 gr semi-jacketed hollow points. Those things make more than 1400fps out of a 4” barrel, and even out of a 2” barrel are plenty fast enough to turn those soft hollow points into quarters. But the recoil was insane, especially when I put bantam grips on for better concealment.

Sounds like a .32 auto. Not an effective defense load.

I didn't see anything suggesting what load or even what kind of gun he was using. I've seen surveillance video of a robber shot in the face with a .357 Magnum, and it barely slowed him down.

There is a lot of space on the face where a shot would not necessarily be lethal or even incapacitating. A .22LR through the eye can be instantly lethal, while a .44 Magnum through the cheek might not even faze him.

Better aim would have saved years of misery by future victim...

Where are the articles showing the perp as a cute kid, and the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth about how he was turning his life around?

Got the gal, and Houston is full of gnats already, so that leaves only one option.

Anyone eorth shooting once is wirth shooting twice. Advice from a tetired cop who saw criminals for life walking free because the jury thought the lifetime criminal was the victim.

If they keep it high enough to hit the pelvis, it’s not a bad shot. Some really good arteries in the area, too. The thought of getting shot in the junk probably deters a lot of guys, though.

Ah, yes, recoil! Why do you think I load what I did? Standard load/pressure .38 Special LEAD full wadcutters/standard non-HP semiwadcutters offer good all-around performance, low flash (good in the dark), and low recoil. Besides, my snubbie is not made for +P rounds.

The gun guru Clint Smith once said that carrying a .357 snubnose, ya best hope ya never have to use t!

After the end of the OSS, and when the CIA was being formed, the organization went through a series of carry arms tests. It came down to either the S and W J-frame, or the Browning Hi-Power. They chose the J-frame, because it worked every time the trigger was pulled! I owned both. I sold the Brownings. No more ftf’s, fte’s, tap rack booms.

My 2nd loads are on strips. No magazines to strip and clean, either.

There is no permit required, must be 21 and no felonies.

The nice thing about a .357 snubby is that even if you miss they’ll probably still catch fire.

Absolutely. When I carry it these days (which isn’t all that often) I’m loading .38 with 148 gr hard cast double-end wadcutter hand loaded to standard pressure.

Yes. Some police officers who have been in fights have decided to go for head shots if needed in the future. But each person decides for himself. The following should be helpful for readers here.
