The 'Absolute Worst Thing' That Could Happen to the Electric Vehicle Industry Right Now Just Did

GM announced that it has issued a recall on every single Chevy Bolt made to date due to the battery fire risk. The move comes after two previous recalls, which were aimed at specific models.

The Bolt was first recalled in November after five cars that hadn’t been in crashes caught fire. After investigating the problem further, Chevy recalled a second batch in July. The problem was traced to two manufacturing defects that could occur simultaneously. The defects—a torn anode tab and a folded separator—created conditions that could lead to a short in affected cells. So far, the company has identified 10 fires that involve faulty batteries, according to an AP report. This third and latest recall includes 73,000 Bolts made from 2019 to 2022, the current model year, and brings the total recall to nearly 142,000 cars, with over 100,000 having been sold in the US. GM estimates that the initial recalls will cost $800 million, and it expects the new one to add $1 billion to the total. GM said it will be seeking reimbursement from LG. […]

BS. Setbacks like this are minor and, in the long run, trivial. Only two things that can kill EVs: 1) the government stops subsidizing them and 2) China completely takes over 100% of the global rare earth mineral mining and production.

Whether they work or not really isn't relevant as long as free money is available in abundance.

Batteries made in China? Good grief.

I would have been happy if we halted all “progress” in 1979.

Maybe they’re doing this as some contractual requirement with the crony feds in lieu of bailout money.

Cigarette lighters are being replaced by fire extinguishers as standard parts.

No worries. The indoctrinated are totally convinced that owning an EV makes them superior in thought and deed, and saves the environment, (environmental concern being just a bonus).

An acquaintance on FB posted that in 7300 miles her Tesla told her she saved 292 gallons of gas, and 339 trees. She was so proud, you could tell she wanted everyone to know that she was smart, and superior. Interestingly, no mention of load on the grid, nor of the environmental impact of lithium batteries.

Whether you love him or can't stand him, Bill O'Reilly's book Old School covers everything really well.

Not about electric ones but the question of accepting self-driving cars has a retort "Not a chance."

Just bought a Rav4 Prime (plug in hybrid) for my wife. The Rav4 Hybrid probably saves about $2,300 in fuel costs per 100,000 miles @ $3.20/gallon over the ICE model which just barely justifies the price difference. The plug in saves an additional $2,000 @ $0.13/kWH (my current rate), assuming at 60-40 mix of electric/hybrid driving. The $9,000 rebate ($1,500 Massachusetts DOT, $7,500 Federal Tax Credit) makes it “free money” as far as I am concerned. I would never vote for a politician who advocated these rebates, but if I have to pay for them, I might as well benefit.

This is less an electric vehicle problem and more a “GM cars are crap” problem. Buying a car from General Morons means you’ll get the defects and recalls you deserve.

So, you want your American cars to be poorly assembled, slow, disintegrate at the end of the loan term, get horrific fuel economy and stomped by all the foreign cars out there at literally everything? That’s what you’d have. Oh, also, you’d likely be dead by now without the intervention of some medical tech or medication developed in the intervening time.

“China completely takes over 100% of the global rare earth mineral mining and production.”

The US was self sufficient in “rare” earths until the government forced the mines to shut down. It’s okay to mine by water cannon and leave a lunar landscape so long as it isn’t in our back yard. Oh, and don’t forget child labor being used in some locations. That doesn’t matter and is no impact on “our” environment. The Trump administration had worked with a US corporation to reopen mines in the US, but I haven’t heard a word about them since Biden took over. The “rare” earth elements are not technically rare. They are messy to mine and refine and they are made rarer by laws and regulations effectively outlawing their production.

Funny.

Can’t they get Ponch and Jon of CHiPS to cruise around and have one strain with a wrecking bar to hold up the side of the crushed car and the other slide underneath to reach in and desperately pull out the endangered driver just before the car blows up into a 40 foot high inferno of flames?

Or, have TV and Hollywood pay for the videos of the true car fires each few days and pay to license to use them in fictional stories later?

This is likely a dumb question but when you hook up to one of those public outlets, how do you pay.

You do realize that stopping in 1979 means continued Democrat domination of politics at all levels, right?

Through an app, through a credit/debit card, or you have an account with the provider that identifies your car when it connects. And some public charge points are ‘free’ - so you pay for it when you patronize the business offering it in increased costs.

An electric mail truck caught fire down the street from me. It set the road on fire and melted half the vehicle.
