ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who has been staying with one of his sisters in Westchester County in the final days of his third term, recently has asked staff members at the Executive Mansion if anyone would like to keep his dog, Captain, who has remained at the state-owned residence after the governor moved out last week.

Two State Police sources told the Times Union on Saturday that the governor had recently asked mansion staff members if anyone would be interested in caring for the dog. Captain — a high-strung mix of shepherd, Siberian and malamute — has nipped a few people since Cuomo adopted him in 2018, the sources said, and a mansion staffer recently took the dog home for a few days but decided he was too much.

Too bad there is probably no one in that area willing to step up and adopt the mutt — unlikely that anyone willing to work for Fredo’s brother would know how.

I am a big fan of kind and gentle dogs who are really good with children and people. It takes all the worry out of “what if he gets out?”.

I’ve NEVER seen a good example of that breed. They’re sneaky. They turn on you. They’re an outdoor dog. If you try to domesticate them it’s a disaster.

What breed are you referring to? The article says he is mixed breed that is part German Shepherd, Siberian Husky and Malamute.

All it takes to establish a rapport with a spitz is to take them for a walk on a short leash. No need to raise your hand against them or even your voice, really.

I recall when I lived in Alaska, there were frequent stories of Huskies (and maybe Malamutes — can’t recall for sure) turning on, and killing, family members after years in the home.

I live in a rural area just outside a midsize, Midwestern metro area. When the economy takes a dive our roads are full of cats and dogs that the urbanites figure would do a lot better in the country than where they are.
My wife and a couple of neighbors have taken in a few cats, but most of them seem to just disappear after a few weeks.
A few of these discarded cats and dogs might find a home after they are dumped by their owners, but most of them wind up as dinner for the coyotes.

When we adopted our rescue dog he would flinch every time we moved our hands.

A couple of years later and he is a loving lap dog and will let us touch him anytime and anyplace—no flinching.

Dogs are a total mirror of their owners.

Exactly that. I don’t care what the mix is. If you get malamut and/or husky in the mix, they’re a high string dog, that goes stir crazy indoors.

I think that mix of dog needs to go through some filtering by the breeder to remove the wildness out and breed in the gentler side. How do you do that? You identify this when the pups are growing up. May take awhile, but in time you might get a great dog, IOWs, there might be some wonderful examples of this breed, living indoors, but I've never seen this. It's like these air heads, that will buy a dog, that has "wolf" in the genes. I have two grandkids. They have a Golden Doodle. They roll around, tackle, chase, the dog, and it plays with them. And you know how little 5 and 6 years old are with a dog, esp a puppy, I can't imagine them doing this with a part malamute, husky mix.
