Blinken: This is manifestly not Saigon

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday defended President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan as Taliban fighters began entering the capital, Kabul.

In a series of interviews on Sunday talk shows, Blinken said the US succeeded in its mission of bringing those responsible for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to justice and argued that remaining in the country was not sustainable.

“Remaining in Afghanistan for another one, five, 10 years was not in the national interest,” Blinken said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

While many have started comparing Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan to America’s flight from Saigon during the Vietnam War in 1975, Blinken pushed back against that comparison.

“This is manifestly not Saigon,” the Secretary of State said on ABC’s “This Week”, adding that Biden had a “tough decision” to make after the Trump administration established a deadline of May 1 to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.

“If the president had decided to stay, all gloves would have been off. We would have been back at war with the Taliban,” Blinken said, adding the US would likely have had to send tens of thousands of additional troops to the country to fight.

Lessseeee … 20 years ago the Taliban attacked our country. We attacked Afghanistan to root out the Taliban.

Now Biden let them have it back along with an arsenal of our weaponry and with threats to attack us again.

How is this - in any rationale - “good”?!

I’m pretty shocked that they are even having to say this. I guess it’s just too much like Saigon to ignore. The effort to blame Trump should be comical.

Funny but the CH-47 helicopters used to ferry people from the embassy to airport are of Vietnam origin.

Yes, it's worse than Saigon.

The NVA was a disciplined regular army with thousands of tanks (I read General Giap's book, darn it). Many ARVN units fought bravely to the end. But the ANA folded like a cheap suit against a guerrilla force it drastically outgunned and outnumbered. And worse, our own military, intelligence, and diplomatic bureaucracy didn't realize how bad things were.

Blinken is right: it's not Saigon. It's worse.

The Taliban were instrumental in directly attacking and killing mass numbers of civilians in the United States, and we have just handed Afghanistan back to them to do it again.

It's much worse than Saigon

South Vietnam fell to a state of the art Russian equipped army of veteran, had core NVA regulars supported by Russian advisors and more new, modern Russian tanks and war planes than Hitler used to invade and crush France

We fled from the battlefield in the face of incompetent, illiterate Jihadi equipped with Kalashnikov AK -47s ( the 47 referes to 1947, the year the rifle went into service) and RPGs
